Left Coast Guy 24 Posted August 30, 2015 And no not talking about the Mods, more like watch mods.... Seems to me there is a trend lately on the sales board (including RWI, RG and the knitting circle) to list these pretend mods that seem to be more the way your watch should arrive than real modifications to the watch. Most times the Seller did the mods themselves.....so there no proof any mod was actually done....no before and after pics....just a price bump. Sure, if some sucker is willing to buy it.....but at a certain point it feels like a scam. Here's some examples: -- Pressed crystal to be flush with bezel -- Cyclops aligned to parallel with date -- Re-aligned date wheel to be centered -- Aligned bezel perfectly at 12 -- Tightened bezel for solid clicking -- Rehaut aligned perfectly at 12 -- Mov't regulated -- Oiled bracelet -- Conditioned the rep strap Aren't most of these concerns indiscernible and even so the type of thing that you'd bring up on QC pics? I mean if I go to buy a watch with a cyclops, I'm going to expect the cyclops is centered....or I'm not going to buy. That's not a "mod", that's the way the watch comes from the factory.....right? MetalMickey 179 Posted August 30, 2015 Seen some with an extra hole punched in the strap, but my favorite was the Franken with gen spring bars...
JSJ 0 Posted August 30, 2015 Yeah, the service one gets me. If people want to pay for a service, fine but it really doesn't add value for me, especially if it was by an unknown watchmaker 12 months ago. Unfortunately, adding a $100 strap is a personal thing. It adds very little value for me. It's like paying for expensive extras on a new car. They are discounted to nearly zero on resale. I will pay extra for something I would do anyway, like lume by Kenny on certain watches or a top AR job where appropriate.
Left Coast Guy 24 Posted August 30, 2015 Yeah, I'm all for the real mods and do appreciate a solid quality strap....so no problem paying for that, just don't piss in my pool and tell me its raining, ya know?
BadPickle 2,747 Posted August 30, 2015 Case softened and re-shaped you mean rubbed a bit of wet and dry on the case to take off the sharp edge. 2 mins work max, add 200 usd to the sale
agl1 0 Posted August 30, 2015 (edited) I buy the same exact model of strap for my Panerai. Each and every one is on an identical strap. I prefer to buy head only so the missus doesn't suspect a new watch! The other annoying thing is when sellers include 2 crap rep straps that usually come free with the watches they're either selling or have recently bought. Seems like a shady way to make an extra $50. Ishmael 92 Posted August 30, 2015 Centering the DWO is legit - for example, I understand that with all the Rolex ceramic subs/GMTs the date window is about 1mm inward from where the normal ETA date wheel sits, so it needs to be taken off and realigned. Every ceramic sub/GMT I've had has an off-center DWO. But I paid my guy next to nothing to fix this, so it wouldn't be added into the cost anyway IMO. And yeah, the rest of that stuff you listed is bullshit.

That belongs to a different topic. Extra accessories does not constitute a mod. I've seen a lot of sales with extra rep straps included, but what usually increases the price by 50 or so is the strap that's on the watch itself and most of the time, it's a strap of a better provenance than the rep straps. I'm willing to pay for mods that require more effort than some spit and polish (and definitely not something I would ask a TD to change a watch for). Like modding the incabloc on a 6497 movement to look like a Y-incabloc.

RUSH2112 11 Posted August 30, 2015 If you get an oil change right before you sell the car you're out $30, you don't get to raise the price. Easiest fix is don't buy.
