Reviving a Tudor Snowflake Submariner (or “Undoing a Finnish Tink’s Handiwork”)

The strip down and clean up

Writing these WIP pieces detailing my humble attempts at watch repair and modification is one of my favourite things to do. I love to share my experiences and as this is my 2000th post, a very appropriate one to document.

I had recently been lucky enough to be given a vintage Tudor Sub with a genuine ETA 2836-2 movement by MAJ75. He had in turn received it from Piccolo in a recent VIP giveaway. the fact this found its way to me is a testament to the kindness and generosity of the members of these hallowed boards.

From what I can gather (Piccolo can probably add more detail to the story), this poor innocent watch had been brutally attacked by a certain Finnish Tinker who had ravaged the dial and glued it to the movement amongst other horological crimes. The movement however, is lovely and works like a charm.

Its my intention to renovate the cosmetics of this piece and bring it back to the sort of condition the movement deserves.

Anyway, enough of my rambling and onto the strip down and photos (not the best I might add).

I started by de-casing the movement and seeing if I could remove the glue from the movement ring, dial spacer and movement itself.

Now the movement is de-cased I got on with prying off the dial and scraping off the glue.

Now the movement is nice and clean. There were a few scratches from the previous “work”

And after the case parts have been through the ultrasonic cleaner.

Well, that’s it for now. I will update the thread when some new parts arrive. :)

Love it..!

I can't remember where it originated from, but at some stage it went to Finland for a "fix"

The movement was apparently damaged and it needed a new one (anyone have a similar experience :P ?!) But I think I lucked out because a gen ETA went in, presumably by mistake! (hopefully not stolen from another innocents watch)

With the dial going in and out obviously the rep factories had made a substandard dial, as it kept on losing paint around its edges for some reason... and the hands were badly produced too, because the lume fell out just by looking at it...

Anyway, I actually really liked it, despite the fact that it had been completely messed up. It feels like it has developed it's own character, and I'm glad a couple of other people have had a chance to get their hands on it.

Looks like it will have it's nails clipped and it's hair brushed over the coming weeks!

OMFG! GLUE??????

I know... I don't know why he didn't just use dial dots and secure the movement with tabs and screws. Oh well, it's all sorted now. Dial, hands and new tropic 19 on the way :)

Although fairly new to the forum the Finnish tinkerer I believe is fin(n)ished here. Seeing all this glue it is not that much of a mystery why.....

Foxindebox, I'll be looking forward to the next instalment. Like BooMoo I love these threads where I get to learn!
