Dress watch ideas

Recommended Posts

Marcoman

Hi guys....so my collection is growing... To add to the skyland, I've a steel fish and a pam456 on the way as we speak...exciting times! I doubt I'm alone in thinking a few watches ahead all the time and strategising!my bucket list includes an omega po (size and colour tbc) and an iwc top gun (might go cheapie on this, plus undecided on colour) and I don't see much more than this atm....maybe a navi....but I think there's room for a dress watch....

So I'd like to tap into the wealth of experience here to see what people's suggestions would be. What I'm looking for is something elegant, not too big on the wrist (41 to 44 maybe), not too thick to slip under a cuff. Must be well known for having high quality rep.im restricting suggestions to the makers I like which are tag, breitling, omega, iwc and panerai. I'm not into ap and Rolex so no need to include....I do like some of the rolexes but I don't think I'd feel right wearing something I'd never buy as a gen if that makes sense....

I do have some ideas but I'm really interested in people's ideas and experience....photos welcome too.....thanks guys....

How you define the term "dress watch" will largely determine your watch options. Some people are really stringent: leather strap, no rotating bezel, three hands max, no complications, thin profile, no lume, etc. Others are much more relaxed and say there's no true "definition" for dress watch. Lots of people these days are wearing subs with suits. Also with your list of " tag, breitling, omega, iwc and panerai" would you be willing to consider patek?

open minded on the whole leather/bracelet....complications are also not out of the question as my tissot prc200 auto is quite elegant despite being a chrono, probably cuz the sub dials and face colour are the same......I see what you say about the subs, similarly depending on the PO colour and size, i would say this could double up as a dress watch maybe.....

Re Patek, nah, i don't think so to be honest. As with the rolex and AP, i don't ever see myself buying a gen of these as they are way out of my price range. But the others, yes. I already own a gen Tag and i'd say gen breitling/omega will be a milestone birthday present in the next couple of years. I think wearing a watch maker that's way out of my league as a gen would not sit right with me. Plus, anyone i know who knew the slightest bit about watches would instantly know it was fake by virtue of being out of most people's price league! That's not to say they arent lovely watches, just not my thing......

I'm thinking something like an IWC portuegeuse or something like this ATM....

This watch on m2m ticks the boxes for a dress watch and is a gen for the price of a rep. Can't go wrong!

Nice watch but not really my style....if i was going gen, Hamilton would definitely be on my list. I have a khaki pilot and they have some nice slim watches that look pretty classy....

Or a ronde, I have the Swiss Quartz version and it's literally so close to gen it's unreal. Less that 200 bucks too, no second hand just like gen ( gen is also Quartz )

If you go 1mm down it's plenty of dress watches:

This is a 42mm (you can put it on a nice Crock black strap):

Back to 40mm:

Again 42mm:

This also 40mm, and with the SS one it's classy:

IWC Portuguese 7 days (as you referred to it--"the one with the sundials") ZFmaker version 3:

http://www.trb88.top/index.php?route=product/product&path=56_138&product_id=2008

Stay with stainless on this one. Regardless or your dial choice, invest in a genuine strap for this one and you'll have a 1st class "super-Rep" dress watch.

I also love my A. Lange & Sohne Big Date Saxonia:

http://www.intime.co/a-lange-sohne/1390-classic-regulator-rg-white-dial-date-on-leather-strap-a17j-.html

Regardless of what you choose, replace the Rep strap with a high quality strap-- makes all the difference

That's good advice thanks....when you say genuine strap do you mean IWC branded strap or say a high quality 3rd party?

I think that's merely a matter of personal choice. There are some great third party strap makers on here-- for a dress watch I'd take a look at McJules' work: http://www.bondtailoredstraps.com/

If you don't mind forking over the $$$. Santoni Straps are absolutely gorgeous. IWC OEMs are also nice, and RIOS1931 straps are a great value-- you can find all of these on eBay, and if you're patient, you can usually find a good deal in the auctions:
