2 weeks in Hong Kong - drowning in a sea of expensive watches

Recommended Posts

Finally home from having spent two fabulous weeks in Hong Kong getting fat; poor and blind.

The food is absolutely amazing ... I will have a very difficult time re-adjusting to Chinese food in Canada. Visited many Michelin rated establishments from the very affordable to very expensive.

So many things on sale: clothing, electronics, trinkets, watches ... never-ending. The Chinese love to do two things when they have time - eat and shop (assuming money is not a problem - and in Hong Kong, a lot of people have a lot of money.)

On Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, every second store seems to be a jewellry/watch store ... the amount of jade, diamonds, 24k gold jewellry; watches of every Swiss maker was astonishing and blinding ... it was bling, bling, bling everywhere ... totally mind-boggling.

The following watch pics were taken with a phone from outside the store so please forgive the quality.

AND these were what I saw on the first day ... I got so inundated with the never-ending offering of watches that I didn't take another pic after the first day; it was just too too much to cope with. Everywhere I went, whether on the streets or in the malls, there were watch stores everywhere including boutiques of all the major Swiss makers. It was absolutely stunning to say the very least.

Sounds nice with some affordable Michelin star food, very jelly over here. That green reverso strap looks like money, very nice :)

Yesterday April 12th was the 50th anniversary of my leaving HK ... since then, I've only been back twice.

Non-stop flight from Toronto was $1425 (all values in Canadian dollars) via Cathay Pacific and accommodations at the Royal Plaza in Mongkok, Kowloon side was approximately $300 per night.

For me, Mongkok was/is the hub of HK night-life and market-stall shopping. It is considered the most densely populated neighbourhood in the world.

Food ranged from downright cheap to $700 dinner tabs for 5 at one-star restaurants.

I would go back in a heartbeat ... such a vibrant place like nowhere else in the world, but it takes time and patience to acclimatize oneself to the amount of walking involved and sardine-packed spaciousness.

I love the names of the watch shops out there, man fook, lucky fook etc...

I ended up in some dodgy apartment with a prison style door locking me in as a big Bangladeshi guy was showing me some of the most hideous submariners I've ever seen, ended up taking more interest in how he managed to get to and from Bangladesh, Taiwan and HK without a valid passport.

"Fook" is quite a common inclusion in a Chinese jewelry store name ... it translates to wealth and prosperity

It translates more like "Buy from me, and you'll get fooked good" hehe

You didn't visit the (relative) new Panerai shop near the Ocean Terminal?

Now that's watch-porn :help3:

But you are so right, it can very easily get VERY expensive if you're in a shopping spree :giggle:
