NCRich 13,748 Posted July 9, 2017 A friend has a well worn Tag that stopped working. It's not the battery unfortunately. Quoted $300 to repair the watch locally, which is really more than this watch is worth anymore. It was close to $1K new so I told him I'd take a look at it. Must be some expensive movement to cost that much I thought. Pretty little thing. Movement is ETA 955.112 with Tag screened onto it. costs $26 at http://www.allwatchp...ment_p_416.html Hmmm......must be something else special about these gens. Davesjourney 27 Posted July 9, 2017 That's the movement in a watch for $1k...!?! Jeez....
Foxindebox 464 Posted July 9, 2017 But... it's a Tag... all my illusions are shattered. You mean to say that the Swiss watch industry is capable of making a markup of such astronomical proportions and not being upfront about it?
NCRich 13,748 Posted July 9, 2017 You going to fix it for $250 then?! :D I thought I'd offer him $75 for the watch. Really just good for parts you know.
MetalMickey 179 Posted July 9, 2017 Genuine quartz watches are horrendously overpriced. Automatics are too, but not by nearly as much.

Piccolo 673 Posted July 9, 2017 I quite like slightly overpriced quartz movements...
NFleischer 4,355 Posted July 9, 2017 I like Tags because in general they are very reliable watches. I have to say I never liked the looks of the older Links range. They were popular in the 80's and 90's. The newer range is much better IMO.

Diver Dave 0 Posted July 9, 2017 (edited) A friend has a well worn Tag that stopped working. It's not the battery unfortunately. I ran a scuba shop in New Jersey for many years, and Heuer (pre-TAG) was in Springfield, just about ten miles away. They allowed scuba shops to become AD's. so I did. I had access to the entire range of watches for 50% of retail, and sold a lot of them. Looking back I should have bought as many chronos as possible, but... well... didn't. In any event when the "quartz revolution" came out, it became very obvious that they were simply casing shitty cheap movements into cases they were having made, and that the quality was plummeting. I stopped selling as an AD and not long afterwards TAG bought them out. This contributes to my prejudice against post-TAG Heur's as being not worth looking at. They are just another marketing company selling shitty quartz movements stuck into gauche cases. All they are is a brand name. carpetmonster 0 Posted July 9, 2017 But to be honest, seriously-Tag Heur's are overpriced. There are producing simply watches with simply ETA movements, calling them as new movement calibre 5, calibre 16 etc.
Xpletiv 16 Posted July 9, 2017 Wow, hideous design and the DW is off! Ha!

There are producing simply watches with simply ETA movements, calling them as new movement calibre 5, calibre 16 etc. Isn't that what everybody else did? Look at Panerai, nice looking watches, but $5000 for HW ETA movement maybe about $200 value. Now there are more brands doing in-house movements, but still plenty of brands selling a 2824 for example with their name on the rotor. Even the beloved Tudor.
