Bitten by the Bug

Last Christmas I didn't own a watch, but it had always been a dream since I was a kid to own a Rolex.

I, like the vast majority here can't afford a gen (without being murdered by the wife) and inevitably stumbled across RWG.

Ordered a Sub from Andrew and was happy beyond belief, but little did I know it was just the beginning.....

Along came a Royal Oak Chrono, then another Sub.

Found some vintage pieces on eBay adding another 3 to the collection. A Seiko 5, Titus and Citizen. I like these watches but I quickly learned that 34-36mm just isn't for me.

Tried my hand at tinkering and ressurected a 1973 Bulova Snorkel. Had to replace movement, dial and hands. This gave me a much greater respect for the watchmaker as this is very fiddly, painstaking work, but it's extremely rewarding.

Bought some straps, bought a couple watch boxes and started making a rather extensive wish list.

Then.... I discovered the 'Gate.....

Quickly added another 7 watches.....

The VC that everyone was talking about, a fantasy Luminor, Speedmaster, Carrera, Planet Ocean, Black Bay and SuperOcean.

A friend even gave me a lovely old SKX007 Pepsi that has aged beautifully.

Ive fallen in love with this hobby and I know I will never go another day of my life with a bare left wrist.

Ive met some really cool people through RWG and have learned a great deal already and look forward to discovering more knowledge every day.

TO THE NOOBS;

If you like watches, this is the place to be. READ all the stickies and grow some thicker skin. Remember that (just like in real life) a stupid question is often met with a stupid answer.

TO THE RESIDENTS;

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, wisdom and banter.

Great forum, great people great hobby

I think the most important thing is, "HAVING A WIFE WHO HAS NO CLUE FROM ONE DAY TO THE NEXT WHAT YOU HAVE ON YOUR WRIST" as watches usually mean shite to them

And with that stunning piece of insight, i hit 1000    hooray

I'm currently in a state of trying to decide what high tier rep I want to buy first.

What is your view on the Gate watches? Quality, etc.

Traveling down to London with a buddy in a week to pick up his Gen Sub 16610LV. I'm sure I will defiantly be all giddy to buy a watch after that :throwingmoney:

DHGate is really only good for cheaper watches. Around the $100 mark. I've received some great watches from the gate but the quality control is not what you get from the TD's here and in many ways you really are just rolling the dice. There are good sellers on the gate though. Two that I trust are Jason007 and Michael Travis.

Shopping in the gate is fun, but if you want top shelf the TD's are the only way to go.

I would never spend over $100 on DHGate,  and there are plenty of good buys for that price.

If you upgrade to VIP you will have access to the DHGate section here.

Get some pics of your mates Sub!

I was in your spot 10 years ago. Now 4 dozen watches later.... You need a secret bank account and a blind wife for sure.

Agreed, lucky mine doesn't really give two shits about what's on my wrist.

For me it's all about timing when I check the mail. What she doesn't know won't hurt her

Ffs keep your wife in the dark about your reps.  I made the mistake of letting her know a couple of years ago.  Clare now comes with me to GTG and wants another watch box for her birthday.

I convinced her to get a watch a few months back, got her a Chanel J12 rep, which she really likes though only wears occasionally
