Was/Is The Rolex Explorer II NOT a popular watch?

Recommended Posts

The Explorer II is the watch that actually turned me on to Rolex. I've gone through almost the first 40 pages in the Rolex section and I came across only 4 threads that were about that watch. So, as I'm new to Rolex watches in general, just wondering if it wasn't popular or was there something about the reps that was putting people off?

There are numerous Explorer II models, so can't be sure to which you're referring - but it is true the replica boards are much more obsessed with vintage Subs, Daytonas, GMT's and even Explorer I's than any of the more contemporary models. That said, there are endless quality reps of the ExpII and I've enjoyed owning a few myself. You can find them for sale in M2M so people definitely own them, but because they're not really subject to customization, they aren't often discussed.

The 16570 "Polar" Explorer II is on the slim side, sits perfect on the wrist, flies well under the radar, has some of the brightest and long lasting lumes.  GMT-function comes in handy. People worry about the ICHS (incorrect hand stack) which after wearing it for 4 years continues to be a  non-issue imho (the other version is unreliable). You have to really look for it at specific times to even see it. It´s a wonderful allrounder. The larger, modern version with the orange hand is an excellent and well made rep as well (with the same issue)

Its a very popular rep just like any with "Rolex" on the dial; just not talking about as much as other models.

That's my watch man, and the Ex I, which I already possess. I will get the white and black face of the II as soon as I can with ICHS, for reliability and if you need to fix it. You see them hardly in the wild, totally underrated. I even named myself after them ... ;-)

Hi Splke,

did ever approach you anyone pointing at the ICHS? Do you have an 2836/2 or 21 jewels?

I have an ICHS polar Explorer 2 like the one of SpIke, and with a 2836 GMT inside. I serviced it, and it works well, a part a bit of low power reserve (probably I just need to take out the main barrel, wash it and grease it again with a bit less grease).

Sweet. Yeah there is soooooo much Rolex porn on this site - but vast majority is the vintage/popular models. I guess... that's why they're the popular models ha!

I ordered a PVD Explorer II through Mary a few days ago. Black dial. I love the look - and going all dark will leave it 'understated'. Honestly, I'd enjoy having a naked SS White dial too... Hope more photos of them in the wild get posted here....
