Watch cabinets for storing 200+ watches = ~$400

Recommended Posts

Hopefully no one gets the disease as bad as I have it right now. I will be letting some go soon (says every addict) for sure. Here's a step by step build for storing 200+ watches.

Recipe:

GRAND TOTAL = ~$400 after a few link through rebates and using my Discover Card

Putting together the 2 cabinets is the hardest part really. It'll take most people 2 hours total, just a lot of assembly there.

Here was my poor watches sitting on towels until my trays arrived. No bueno.

Filling the trays was no issue, but now the trays were rattling around in the drawer. Still, no bueno.

The closed cell foam was super easy to work with. I had a metal square and a long razor knife. This stuff is really forgiving. The best part was the foam's width was EXACTLY the width of the drawer.

Larger blocks push the trays all the way forward in the drawer. Smaller pieces line each side and hold them in place tightly. How tightly? I miscut a piece and tried to pull the tray out...no bueno. Had to use a screw driver to get the foam out. LOL

Nothing worth a whole lot really. The Timex stuff I picked up for $10 to $50, which include swapping out the strap. I've been pretty lucky finding vintage stuff on ebay. I hit UK, US and Canada ebay looking for unique ones that are cheap. I've only had 3 out of 60 arrive D.O.A. and every seller gave me an immediate refund. I have a BelAir headed back to a seller to reattach the second hand. The case is gold plated and was hideous, but a little cape cod and she was absolutely gorgeous. There just a lot of fun. I've got some Swiss, British, Indian, Soviet and Chinese handwinders too, again all under $50. Lots and lots of reps of course and then about 35 watches from some upstarts like Helgray and Vratislavia that I really like. Outside of Timex, my gen's are mostly Seiko and the new microbrands, but I do have 2 Hamiltons that I'm very fond of.

Congrats, this cabinet is a clever way to save money for serious watch collectors.  And with room to store them free watch catalogues & books in bottom drawers if you have less than 200 watches :maty:

It can also be wheeled out of sight when nosy relatives come over. Well done.

Tell me about the Sharkey SBDX001! I've been trying to get info on it but even legendwatch won't get back to me lol. I know they had some QC issues when they were first released and then haven't heard anything since...

F*ck!  My excuse for not buying more watches is that I have no where else to keep them. This gives me a perfect place to put more watches.

Good work. Looks really, really good. Well done

They worth what you value them, that's the only important thing !
I'm pretty sure they are all interesting with a bit of history attached to them, either history by what they are or history by how you got them

My OCD kicked in further last night and I visited jewelry supply again and ordered:

12 - 1" stackable trays with 7x1 and 3x6 flocked inserts for sorting extra straps and things

Name: image.jpeg Views: 4 Size: 150.6 KBName: image.jpeg Views: 4 Size: 17.5 KBName: image.jpeg Views: 4 Size: 213.0 KB

2 - 50ct storage jars in foam, thought this would be a great way to store bracelet links and spring bars, etc.

Name: image.jpeg Views: 4 Size: 224.2 KB

***Also found out how I got the cheaper price on the trays last time. Coupon code GIVEME10 takes 10% off everything.

.

I once had a nasty case of flocked inserts, but the doctor gave me some cream, and it all cleared up.

Finished the project today. Used up nearly all my foam.

Started with jewelry supply's standard, stackable, textured plastic tray. Lined the edges with closed cell foam again. 3 trays fit, stacked in each drawer.

Used the flocked inserts for parts, bands and tools.

And finally the capsule trays to sort bracelet links. Even longer, wider links will fit like this engineer bracelet.

And you can be, this is very nice !

The link tray with the capsule looks amazing, even if this is only bracelet links, it has a candy store feeling :)
