It's 'you're' speaking crap ... I wasn't talking quality , but aesthetics. The Royal Oak Offshore  is one of the ugliest watches ever manufactured . If it had an Invicta Emblem , it would be a thing of ridicule . In my opinion it looks like something a 12 year old boy would draw , as a cool watch . Obviously i accept this is only my opinion , and you are free to think they are great .

WELCOME BACK, D!  EXCELLENT start to your collecting again.  Tell me, if you don't mind, WHERE O WHERE did you find that OMEGA GOOD PLANET GMT 600??  I have the gen of this and have been looking for a decent rep.  Thanks!

dave

Hi, Gang!  Tuesday's ride is a reappearance of this fab TAG HEUER AQUARACER 300M chronograph purchased from an outstanding Dude on RWG.  Just a great looking rep; and in my non-expert eyes, a fairly convincing model of the gen.  dave: (old pics.)

Wow you are an angry little chap , i didn't expect one of  AP's PR team to be  on a rep site !! I think in general the brand produces some ugly ass watches most RO, RO Offshore , The Millenary watches look like they were designed by Liberace . I like their beautiful Audemars dress , complications and vintage watches . However their current range seems to be aimed at people with gold teeth and sleeve tattoos . Just my opinion a nice day/date SS ultra thin RO ..OK , a nice RG dress watch  , a beautiful white gold minute repeater , vintage gold calendar etc etc all horological porn. However watches like the RO Offshore are the ultimate look at me ,look me i'm a muppet accessory .I'm sorry if that upsets you . It is just my opinion , i know it isn't endorsed by others  .

Doesn't upset me mate, it's your taste and I can't do anything with it. Didn't expect for you to take it this personal. I don't like some models either and yeah rappers ice out these pieces and make them look bad. Cheers

Yes of course. Not even a comparison for me. The gen you can hold and gain value over time if you buy second hand. You can hand it down to your next generation, and wear it with proud.

The gen will easily outlast you, if you service it. Good luck with your reps and see if it can last 10-20 years and even if it does would you hand it down to your kid ? I know I wouldn’t

Having seen pictures of vintage Rolex, both inside and out, I'd argue that a top modern rep is of a higher mechanical quality and finish quality than a really old Gen vintage Rolex (the much, much, older ones). The advent of computer controlled machines etc allows the making of parts with much finer tolerances than the hand made Rolex parts of old. Yet you'd hand a vintage Rolex down to your kids, so what's the difference? Is it different because you're making a younger Chinese guy rich instead of an old Swiss family?

And discuss...

So there's a pride of spending ridiculous amount of money on an "outdated, outmatched time keeper" and passing it to the next generation but there isn't to do the same with just a "non-ridiculous amount of money outdated, outmatched time keeper" ?
As for holding value... you'll have to be very wise on the choice of watch you make, not all keep their value or increase.

Passing something to a generation have little to nothing to do with monetary value, it's about sentimental value, symbolism, I would rather have my child or grand child get a rep collection build with interest and care than a mere genuine just bought to show off and have an eventual resell value.
The most valuable heritages that I have are worthless in money but their worth to me still can't be valued.

If  a rep doesn't have complications and has a service now and then it could last indefinitely. And quality reps might become very rare in future years. Chinese capitalism and law  enforcement are maturing fast.  We might be  living in a Golden Age of Reps.  We can buy and sell and trade high quality, reliable reps which are almost impossible to spot without a  loupe. Can it last forever?

Ah, the eternal angst because it isn't fair reps cost so much less than gens. You need not defend them, they stand on their own.

I wear all my reps proud...and oft with an internal smirk, proud of the money saved.

I have spent considerable money fixing some gens that were worn with care. Though they do fail at a lower rate than reps, the cost of "service" sometimes raises the hair on my back. Especially when  I can buy several brand new reps that together will last more than 10-20 years for what it costs to fix a single gen.

My kid has eyed my mixed gen/rep collection, asked questions, borrowed a couple reps for special occasions, and will be thrilled to get the whole fangled caboodle some day.

If bought in the vibrant 'nearly new market' it'd have been closer to 5-7 watches from top brands (admittedly no gold) and their initial depreciation done.  As an asset, they would definitely be a better choice. The losses on P&P and M2M will mount rapidly. The OP can spend his money as he likes and if it makes him happy then great.

But I count 15+ watches that lose all semblance of class and elegance if he rotates through them so frequently.

That said it is one hell of a collection right there!

That's fine, your opinion which differs to mine! I will not pass anything down especially a gift on a special occasion to my children (i.e. wedding gift) a fake watches, or will i ever buy a fake watches on a special occasion like (wedding present), or big milestone achievement.

If you think your rep can outlast you then that's great. Unfortunately, 60-70% of my rep has died in the last 5-10 years. and the few that are survived has fog in crystal or running 2-3 Mins fast/slow per day, even most of them just sitting in the watch box unworn. Would I pay someone 300-400 dollars for Overhaul for the fake watch? LOL! go figure.

10-20 years for a rep.... I think your expectation is too high.. Alot of my rep got fog on the crystal sitting in the watch box doing nothing.

few of my watch bracelet break apart while wearing and walking on the street, and completely destroyed the watch when it hit the ground. Several of my rep minutes hand/second fall out for no reason after 6 months. 2-3 of my chronograph 7750-second hand does not reset back to centre. and one chronograph cant be stopped anymore.

I had over 20-30 Reps in the past 10-15 years so I can tell from experience.

I'm not saying GEN can't have an issue, but they have QC, and warranty (Rolex and Breitling has 5 years warranty). My parent own a 1970s Rolex which he wore every day (he worked as a chef) and has not been serviced for over 10 years. It still keeps a great time and has no issue whatsoever.

I understand your valid points that are the gist of the never ending arguments between reps and gens. Your initial post dismissed reps altogether with "not even a comparison for me" so I rise to the rescue of reps.

Sorry about your streak of bad luck, but I have more reps than you and have had bad luck with some, but not the calamities you describe. It is recommended to check the tightness of all external screws of any rep upon receipt. I had a bracelet come off in the early days and the watch hit the ground, now I tighten all screws and have not had 1 problem since. No fog on any of my watches and have traveled extensively with reps though I live most of the time in a dry climate.

You have some comprehension fail, OK, english is not your primary tongue. I said " I can buy several brand new reps that together will last more than 10-20 years for what it costs to fix a single gen". That means that several reps in succession will last longer than 10-20 years for less money than servicing 1 gen. I will further argue that the movements in any of my 5 quartz reps will last just as long as a quartz gen.

QC and warranty for gens is no panacea. Your parent has a working Rolex with no service for 10 years. I had an Omega that never worked since the first day in spite of being returned to the store several times. They should have replaced the watch with another but never did. I have a working Piaget that I sent in for routine service and the company decided to replace the movement without consulting me, unilaterally charged me 6 figures, and the new movement had 1 less complication than the original. I got a Rolex with a boring standard issue dial and asked the AD to put in a different dial before leaving the store. He said it was impossible, the dial is not interchangeable but he could upsell me and swap it for another watch for $3-5,000 more......I got an aftermarket dial including installation for $300 elsewhere.

For these reasons, I have learned on RWG to like the reps that are reliable more than the ones I might otherwise fancy.
