McJules 396 Posted July 24, 2013 i got my qc pics this morning and i was wondering what is this machine? i saw the timegrapher but never this one. anyone knows what it is?
mellan50 0 Posted July 24, 2013 I think it is PT´s new pressure test equipment.
Cynikal.Mindset 1 Posted July 24, 2013 (edited) looks like a fancy timegrapher or pressure tester Edited July 24, 2013 by Cynikal.Mindset
black263 228 Posted July 24, 2013 It's a dry vacuum tester. The watch is placed in position with a very sensitive caliper guage measuring the watch thickness. When a vacuum is created, if the watch is airtight, the case expands slightly and this can be sensed by the machine. If it's not airtight, the pressures equalise and there is no movement. If it is airtight with a crap crystal seal, the crystal pops off.
McJules 396 Posted July 24, 2013 ohh that's cool!! so would that mean it's slightely waterproof? or am i wrong?
Cynikal.Mindset 1 Posted July 24, 2013 pretty sure it senses crystal deflection to test resistance to water...the case itself shouldn't expand
Wriggles 12 Posted July 24, 2013 I think thats what black meant, not that the case expands but the case and crystal overall width
black263 228 Posted July 24, 2013 I think thats what black meant, not that the case expands but the case and crystal overall width Correct. The overall thickness changes. Don't forget that with some watches, it may even be the case back that deflects.

McJules 396 Posted July 24, 2013 Correct, puretime. I had an amazing service with Angus and chatted a bit, wich usually td's don't do (in my previous experience)
Cynikal.Mindset 1 Posted July 24, 2013 only does 2bar, but I guess that's better than nothing
black263 228 Posted July 24, 2013 Problem with vacuum testers is that it the extra pressure inside the watch is trying to blow it apart. Crystals aren't designed to take pressure in that direction. So there is a limit how much pressure differential you can measure safely. The positive pressure testers try to force the crystal tighter, as would happen in real life and they are designed to cope.
