Why you shouldn't buy a smartwatch (at least not yet)

Recommended Posts

Personally I have zero interest in so-called 'smartwatches', but saw a well-reasoned article at Slashgear about why we shouldn't consider buying into the first generation of smartwatches and thought it was worth sharing...

Take a step back

The smartwatch, version 2.0, should bring it additional sensors and better apps. As early adopters give feedback and help Developers understand the experience a bit better, things improve. The hardware will round into a more approachable shape, and the apps will hopefully do more than alert you to things happening on your smartphone.

The Apple Watch will kickstart the smartwatch segment, and give Developers a reason to start doing their thing for wearables. Like the smartphone before it, Apple’s wearable offering isn’t the first, but it will set the trend moving forward.

Think back to the first iPhone (if you remember it, that is), which launched without the App Store. It was exciting, but when you took a step back and analyzed the use cases, there weren’t a whole lot. A few short years alter, we had really good apps — and the hardware improved drastically. In turn, everyone (Android OEMs and Developers, really) snapped into shape and followed suit.

Smartwatches are exciting, with approachable pricing, but just give it time. Even if the hardware doesn’t slim down, the apps will bulk up, giving you enough reasons to habitually glance at your wrist rather than dig into your pocket for a phone.

I really dont get why people wear/buy smartwatches. Is it really that hard to pull out your mobile phone when receiving a message? And why the heck would you wear a steel apple watch when working out? I prefer my rubber casio more when hitting the gym.

I would get crazy with everytime notifications on my wrist.

The only ''smart'' watch i really like is the Jaeger Lecoulture Aston Martin. You can open your Aston with it :)

Seems to me that other than the health monitoring stuff, the main purpose of a smartwatch is to tell you when you've got an email or other message so you can take your smartphone out of your pocket and read it...

... but I thought that's why phones were designed to vibrate or make a sound when a message arrived... ;)

The JLC/Aston tie-in is cool. If I could afford a new Aston, I'd have to do that :D

Haha indeed! But i thought the vibrating part was designed for women?:rofl:

Yeah, you should look at the faces of people when unlocking your Aston

I can't most likely not even afford the watch...

Can we get something similar for an old Volvo please?

Then I guess it would be a Timex or something affordable.

There are a bunch of commenters on Economist.com - in an article about the Apple Watch, saying this is going to be the end of Swiss mechanical watches.

Yeah that was Jony Ive. The only reason they hired his best bud was because they stole his ideas for the straps and made it their own. Cheaper than copyright infringement.

I wouldn't buy the Apple smart watch, but I am hopeful that it will generate another leap forward (even though there are plenty of inventions to do that) for wearable technology. I can appreciate the platform they came up with to provide a canvas, if you will, for app developers to come up with new ideas.

My wife, for example, has the pebble and since she's an ER physician assistant she can't grab the phone while dealing with a patients/charting/ assisting other nurses and docs. It's just a lot more convenient for her to get her pages/texts on her wrist rather than pulling her S5 out of her pocket.

I can't stand it, and agree with the article, but it's perfect for her and her brother who is a physical therapist.

Yeah, I can see it having utility for some people but it is hard to imagine them becoming widely popular. Though perhaps they will. But I laugh every time I see someone write (after press articles) that they will destroy the market for Swiss (they mean mechanical) watches.

I'm holding off for a smart Bracelet personally, Because I'm not ready for a smart watch.....

But I whole heartedly disagree with holding off on technology.

I wonder if Nate the Article writer....

Still has a Black and white TV ...because 4k OLED TV's will get perfected on the next model.

Still doesn't have a car ...Because the next evolution of the car will run on water and fly.

Still doesn't travel by plane ...Because the soon we will have space travel flights.

Still hasn't bought the iPhone ...Because the next iphone will be better.

Still hasn't got Broadband ...Because the next evolution of data transfer will be faster.

Still Hasn't watched Star Wars because the next episode of Star ars will be better.

In fact, Star Wars is a great way to end my rant. I hate to tell you Nate but the First Star Wars Trumps any of the current latest Star Wars.

Sometimes 'Waiting on the next evolution of something' isn't so great.

Sometimes it just sounds like the bitter ramblings of someone who's a tight arse.

Buy new tech because it's cutting edge and new and you want to try it. Don't spend your life waiting on the next big thing..there will always be something after that.

Yeah, buy the first generation of everything. You get to pay twice as much and be a beta tester at the same time.

Enjoy. I myself will pay half as much for a better version of your latest toy.

Hmm...

Let's see: the first iPhone was a triumph of style over content. The appstore didn't yet exist and although it looked funky it was seriously flawed. The second iteration was considerably superior and that's what the smart money waited for.

You do what you want, but there's a well-known rule in the tech industry: only suckers buy v1.

The rest of your so-called argument is too ridiculous to be relevant, but I am amused to note that most pundits agree that the second Star Wars movie was better than the first ;)

Totally in agreement the V1 of any product will be superseded with subsequent versions. Even our beloved Rep factories have cottoned on to this scheme.

However, simply being dismissive of a smart watch is plain foolish and short sighted for sure.

Based on its merits, I see no conflict between me wearing a Swiss watch or a smart watch, other than getting more choice.
