Helson Shark Diver Brass

Recommended Posts

So this arrived today, which was a bit of a surprise, as I ordered it at about 9:30PM not even two full days ago. Hats off to Helson for the one day shipping from Hong Kong! This is the 42mm Shark Diver Model in brass with a Mother of Pearl dial. The full specifications are below:

-Case: Brass, Ø 42 mm - height 14.5 mm - lug distance 22 mm - length, lug to lug 51.5 mm,

-Screwed crown w. side protection

-Sapphire crystal: 3 mm thick - inside AR coated.

-Water resistance: 500m/1.640 ft

-Dial, hands and bezel coated with swiss SuperLuminova

-Strap: Comfortable 22 mm rubber strap with 20mm brass buckle

-Movement: 24 Jewel Japanese NH35 Japan automatic

I had been looking for a bronze watch initially, but found the price of these to be above my budget, so after some research, I began looking into brass as well, and found this. The price seemed good for the specifications, and with Helson's strong history of delivering solid divers, I gave it a shot. Now, this just arrived today, so I have been unable to really test out its accuracy and other features, but with a workhorse Seiko NH35, I'm not too worried. The watch is a solid chunk of brass, with a very aesthetically pleasing dial when the light hits it. The lume glows like a torch and appears to keep glowing strongly longer than most of my other watches. The only lume job that appears to beat this is on my Boschette Harpoon, but I think that was literally dunked in superluminova .

The presentation tube was a nice touch, although it will mostly collect dust and hold the additional tool and pins that came with it. The strap is common of other micro brands, but still a nice strap in general, although I hope I can find a replacement for it tomorrow after a bit of shopping locally, as none of mine fit the large tang on the buckle. There is a huge 1000+ booth flea market type setup very close to my house that opens every weekend, so I will take a look around there for any straps (If not I will be looking into some of our resident strap makers here).

The watch features hex, screw in, solid end links, and comes with an extra set in case of accidents. A hex tool was also included which makes removing the pins a breeze. I am glad to see the watch arrive without any patina, as I am hoping to allow it to form naturally. My thought is that the humid and salty Florida weather will move the process along quicker than other areas, but only time will tell. I will update this if any new information or observations come up, but below you will find some quick pictures I snapped when it arrived.

That's where I'm planning on going to look tomorrow! Small world Daffy

Have you seen any decent strap sellers there?

Nothing other than the normal "cheapy" stuff. Nothing along the lines of PhillyRock or JohnG.

If you find one, please let ME know.

I was worried about that. The tang is so thick that it doesn't appear to fit the normal sized straps I have, so I was hoping to find something there tomorrow. Either way I'll be there, as my wife has taken a liking to some of the fruit trees they sell there, and she decided we will be buying some . Every time I go there and walk past the watch booths, I half expect to see some Canal Street reps to go along with the fake Louis Vuitton purses and bags so many of them openly display.

Great watch. Helson makes a great watch. I am in the process of picking up a 40mm Shark Diver for the second time. Unbelievable lume too.

I agree about the lume. This is second only to my Boschette Harpoon... but it's almost not a fair comparison, as Boschette seems to be known for ridiculous amounts of lume

I think the blue dial would look good on brass. So far it appears to be a solid watch, so I would say to go for it if you're on the fence.

Thank you! The dial really catches the light when I wear it outside. I think it will have a more dramatic effect once the brass develops a dark patina.
