Yes, this hobby will lead to you to a gen, eventually. Here is my beauty:

There's three considerations for me:

1) Is the rep so good a gen is just a stupid financial decision? A lot of my rolex reps fall in to this category

2) Will it never be repped because of movement, design, etc?

3) Will I ever stop being so cheep that I actually buy a gen?

So, to answer your question, probably.

Or you'll eventually get a gen that isn't repped well (or at all)... Ah Nomos.

I doubt I'm likely to get a high priced gen just because I would feel obligated to wear it all the time. There are too many really nice watch designs out there to limit myself to one type.

yes I like what NYgaints said, some of the reps are so good it be stupid to buy a Gen, unless u win a lottery for $10,000 or so and just go buy one but then I think to my self with $10,000 I can buy lots and lots of reps !

Yep. For example, the new rolex sea dweller will be $11k. And I know they're already working on a rep, which will be damn near close to perfect right out the gate. Why the hell would I buy the gen, which is just a super overpriced hunk of stainless steel.

My gens aren't particularly well repped (Speedy Moon, B&R0394 and Monaco.) So there's that.

I'm on the fence about another grail of mine, the PAM 328. Good rep if I can find one is 3-4 hundred. Gen is 7.5k. Those reps are REALLY good, which makes the decision that much harder.

I have a mix of gens and reps (click my collection link in my sig to see)

I value both. All my watches are in my watch boxes because I chose them, and they are special to me.

You know, I'll probably buy a Tudor Pelagos eventually. Even if it was repped. I really think it's an amazing, special watch, that's actually not rediculously expensive and I'd like to support what tudor has been doing.

Most of us collect both. With reps you can't really do gold so any gold watch almost has to be a gen. Except for my don Ramon that's matches perfectly, I have to say.

Personally, any of the gen watches I would ever be interested in begin at $30k. Outside of Powerball or a lucrative drug heist, I'm never spending that kind of money on a watch. Also, most of the watches I'm interested in are rep'd at least somewhat decently. Some people might be interested in status, where owning a gen to show it off is just as important as liking the watch design itself (which is fine with me, by the way). But I couldn't care less about that. Collecting reps are fun because I can wear and admire a watch I'll likely never see in genuine form. And not just one watch, but a plethora! John Mayer might disagree, but piles of cash tend to have that effect. I have an Eberhard Traversetolo Vitre, which I paid about $1,200 for, and that's as "gen" as I'm ever gonna get.

My collection is mixed as well. I went through a lot of reps but now have stuck to a few that I simply could never justify spending real money on.

Owning the real thing brings a great deal of satisfaction, until it goes wrong. Then it brings a great deal of expense. When a rep goes wrong you can just throw it away. No great loss. I had a gen Tag until a few months ago. Part of the dial decoration came loose. The quote for replacing the dial, a service, a replacement strap - £800!! That's a draw full of reps right there.

At the end we all end up with the Gen that is if you can afford one ofcourse. But the rep hobby is so much fun. And if you have a Gen......there is nothing more to dream of so...........what is it that you/ we want, lol.

Mine Gen is saying hello :-)

Wearing gens do nothing for me, wearing my gen Tag F1 feels no better than wearing my rep Breitling plus reps are just naturally more fun

Super-reps do pretty well in taking away the urge/need for a gen. So, for fun and with money to spare there are several gens I´d like to own. Do I really "need" them or think it´s worth saving up for them? Not any more. Reps give a lot of freedom and ease of use (no worries) it´s just a pity that in the range above 300 usd the quality doesn´t get better as well as the looks.

With just a bit more assembly care and look for the detail, not even better materials needed, this game could really be something else (is the dial aligned? are the hands fixed? is the movement correctly placed? are the gaskets lubed? are all screws fixed etc.) - just double the assembly cost from about 6 usd to 12 usd/piece (assumption is a 267 USD/month factory worker salary)

On the longterm wishlist are Rolex Explorer II/ Submariner and 3 others below 5k (Breitling/ Tudor etc.) each. Would not want to put everything in a PAM or AP to end up with one watch only.
