Need a piece o advice with my TC Sub

Recommended Posts

drmdtsap

Hi there guys to all of you. I have been enjoying my TC Sub for about 6 months now. Today I have noticed some blue colored stains on my cyclops. How can this be fixed? Do I have to replace the crystal? If so, this could be done by removing the upper part of the watch or do I have to take it apart from the back? By the upper part of the watch I mean removing the insert-bezel and then the retaining ring and then the gasket with the crystal.

And what on earth did cause this? I take good care of my TC and it looks as new as day 1.

Looks like it could be one of two things, either the AR has been worn off or the glue that holds the cyclops on was applied unevenly. I'm guessing it's the second one.

But the problem came in today or at least the last days. If the glue was applied unevenly this would be shown on the first day, wouldn't it?

It may be coming loose and what you see is the refractive effect of air versus adhesive?

If you look at the 2nd photo (right hand side) it looks like the glue is unevenly spread there.

Is it ready to fall off ?

As a suggestion, you could just change the cyclops? Or ask TC? I am sure he would sort it for you.

I see... Is there any fix? If the problem is caused from the AR coating, could I use cape cod to take it all off? Or the crystal replacement is an one way road for me? If so I am thinking to install a genuine one. Any Rolex submariner 16610 crystal would fit? I also have a spare clarks gasket to throw in. But can this be done by taking apart the upper part of the watch?

Already emailed TC. I am sure he will help me out. I did open this tread just to make sure in case I install a genuine crystal, if this can be done by taking apart the upper part and if any sub crystal will fit.

The cyclops is not ready to fall off. It's solid as a rock.

Genius

Just pop the bezel assembly and you should be able to get the crystal out

Well just fixed it... I masked the rest of crystal and insert with tape. I used a tiny piece of cape cod and got rid of the blue shade on the cyclops. I guess that the problem was caused from the AR coating on the cyclops(perhaps from a contact with something, somehow some of the coating was piled off) and not from the glue(come on guys, it's a TC Sub and not a typical Chinese rep) . At least it's clean now and perfect. I will eventually get a genuine crystal but I am not in a harry now. So I will raise some funds for it and I can definitely wear my TC until then.

When I get the gen crystal and bother to take apart the upper part of the watch to install it will throw in a Clarks gasket and a gen insert also, which are lying patiently on my drawer from October.

Does this mean we can just cape cod the ar off of the cyclops?

I have an TC LV and would like to remove the non-gen ar

Yes you could. And i am sure of it because I have just done it a few hours ago. But be careful. Use a small piece of cape cod and mask the insert and the rest of the crystal in case you accidentally make a pass on it.

After you are satisfied with the result(with a few passes it would be off)wipe the working area with toilet paper, remove the masking tape, wash the area with a little water and soap and the dry it with a clean soft cloth like the one we use for eye/sunglasses. Do this under good light and observe the cyclops in some view angles just to make sure you got rid of the AR coating completely and from all of its surface at the end of the process. It's a piece of cake. Honestly, I like it more with out the AR coating. The date is more vivid. I am thinking of installing a non AR genuine crystal. The more i see it, the more i love the look of the cyclops.

I will do some pics under the day light in a few hours. Stay tuned!

And some daylight pics. It's a bit of a cloudy weather today... Also corrected the date, I was two days behind... LoL

Also I did some homework and from what I have seen the TC sub is periodically correct without the AR coated cyclops. Am I right here guys?

Also when Rolex used AR coating cyclops, the coating was made under the cyclops and not on the cyclops, wasn't it?

Anyway, I love it this way... The non AR way... :D

P.S.: and yes... i do shave my arms...

As for replacing the crystal, its done by removing the back of the watch case, removing the movement then remove the bezel (complete with insert) then you push the old crystal out from the inside using a press. The installation of a new crystal is the reverse with new gaskets on the crystal and possibly a crystal retaining ring ( not 100% sure if this model has one ). You will need a crystal press to push the crystal in squarely you cannot do it by hand due to to the pressure required.

I saw someone posted that you can lift out the bezel insert and lift the crystal away from the front of the case, ,i,dlove to see a video of that being done. I know I do it on certain watches but only those with with a plastic crystal which I use a crystal puller to squeeze them out of the case.

On TC subs if you remove the bezel and then the retaining ring then you could easily swap the crystal. It is not necessary to do it by removing the back, movement and so on. There are people with TC Subs who tried to remove the bezel and accidentally removed the retaining ring with the gasket and the crystal also. So I guess this could be done by removing the upper part of the watch. Definitely a crystal press is necessary to secure the retaining ring back in place and a new gasket so that the crystal will sit tight.

....removing AR-coating with Cape Cod is an an arduous task...I know from having done it myself. But I would not recommend this method to anyone....unless I really disliked them....;)

But yeah; it does do the trick, and since you've already spent the time and energy...good job...:)

Looking a lot better now! Much better without the AR than having the blue reflection.

Cheers for the info on the crystal mate, must be just a snug fit to be able to pull out from the front of the case then, how do you pull it out? As a crystal lift reduces the size of the plastic crystals something you obviously can't do with a glass one.

Luckily, the crystal gasket on TC subs for some reason is kind of loose. So when you remove the retaining ring, the gasket with crystal pops out easily. When you change the crystal on a TC sub it's wise to change the gasket with a Clark's one which has a tight fit. The gen gasket from what I have heard needs a little "shaving" to fit right.

I'm guessing the waterproofness of those reps is what I might call suspect then mate

Nope, mate. They are waterproof and tested. The problem with waterproofing occurs ONLY if you change the crystal and use the same crystal gasket. If you use a new one or a Clarck's then you have no worries absolutely. Lots of TC sub fellow members do diving without any problem at all.

Confirmed for me... My TC LV does not have AR on the cyclops. Most gen 16610's do not have AR so you were better off stripping it off anyway.
