Tank MC or Santos (mid-size)?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, haven't been active here for awhile and dropped by to get some ideas on Cartiers (seems like there are much more love for Cartiers over here than the other side)!

Thinking about getting a Cartier as my next rep but can't really decide between the Tank MC and the mid-size Santos. Would love to add a Cartier to my dress watch collection along with my FM crazy hours and JLC reverso.

From what I gather, the Santos appears to be the "must have" for most members. But that appears to be the XL size. As I have a rather skinny wrist (6.25"), I don't see how I can pull off the XL. Does anyone here have any experience with the mid-size and whether the quality is on par with the so called super rep status of the XL?

For the Tank MC, I actually owned it for about a week early last year but sold it as didn't get any wrist time (was heavily into PAMs at that time). But IIRC, the dial wasn't as crisp especially the "Cartier" wording on the dial. On top of that, it was also in a Miyota movement which had some slight stuttering and the watch felt pretty light. Was wondering if anyone know whether there's a newer version of it?

I'm keen to hearing your opinions about which one to choose and of course, some wrist shots would definitely help make up my mind for me :)

Thanks in advance!

i got the santos 100 33mm. the size is perfect for my wrist! it looks classy with a suit but it can be used for casual wear as well. I would say the quality is on par with the XL one, even the shitty strap it comes with is just as shitty as the XL ones. The cabonchon, dial, and finishing are also good. However on mine the rotor is bit noisy. i dunno if its just mine or the other watches got the same problem. I honestly like the tank MC but i find it too big for my wrist (we have the same wrist size). Others will say the XL looks fine on smaller wrists, but i tried it and i dont like it as my perfect watch size is around 40mm hahaha. but if you are used to PAM then the santos 100 XL probably shouldn't matter

Why not get the classic tank? I have one and the rep is very close to the original and very nice and small the classic go to cartier for me

I agree with what Chats said. I will add the strap is so obviously cheap that if you plan on keeping the watch you may need to consider the cost of upgrading to a gen strap. On e-bay they regularly go for $300+.

I tried to find a strap maker to create one for me but no one I contacted would, so I just bought a gen one. I will say it was worth it and really makes the watch.

As for size I have the Santos 100 XL. It is the largest I would want on my 6.5'' wrist and I think the 33mm version might have been a better choice.

Thanks for the info mate. I am used to PAMs but I'm wanting something dressier to go with my suits (I wear them everyday for work). I don't want it to be too rugged as I'll have my 318 occasionally if I feel like "going against the norm" with a larger watch. Any chance you'll have a wrist shot of it since your wrist size is the same as mine? That'll be great for me to judge.

As for the Tank MC goes, I agree that it's just too big for my wrist. I tried it on and somehow it just looks out of place. Especially when it's supposed to be a dressier watch for me.

Cheers mate. I'll definitely change the strap as I've heard all about its crappyness. But going gen with its cost might seem a tad bit too much. I've came across a few strap makers on the bay that have straps for the santos. Aren't they any good?
