golddusterrolex360 0 Posted July 22, 2014 (edited) With my childhood hero actor passing this weekend I got out the dvd set, started with the pilot Backlash of the Hunter and made it through most of season one, enjoying him in his prime and watching the Firebird morph from a raised white letter tired no side trim esprit into the more recognizable Esprit 400 with whitewall tires and body side trim. Oh, the acting was nice too:) With my new horology obsession I also noticed a nice looking chrono watch with leather strap he wore in quite a few scenes, googled it and found it to be a Heuer chronograph, makes sense, Garner was a race car driver in real life too. Guess that has to be my next watch............... Edited July 22, 2014 by golddusterrolex360
gmchris 68 Posted July 22, 2014 Yeah Garner was great as Jim Rockford, was my favourite Saturday night entertainmentas a 70's kid. I liked all the private eye type stuff. I like my watches but like to have a story too, it's nice when someone says 'hey nice watch ' but they are more interested when you can say 'yeah it's from that Bond/Mcqueen/Stallone movie or its as used by NASA or the SAS etc. Do you have any stills of The Heuer? edwinowl 180 Posted July 22, 2014 Oh god so pleased you started this thread. I saw big jim in one episode wearing a blue shirt and a blue faced watch on bracelet. No idea what it was as I was too young but as a result I bought myself a similar looking timex blue face on bracelet. Embarrassing now when I think back I'd be around 13. Bought myself a blue shirt too. He was my first inspiration into the watch world. RIP jim.

RUSH2112 11 Posted July 22, 2014 Interesting that he had a nice watch considering where he lived on that show.
dalboy 2 Posted July 22, 2014 Old age and Death ! 2 things we have no control over . But we do have control over what we do in the middle .. and he lead a full and good life .. still a shame . R.I.P. James Garner . Incidentally, loved Rockford .. loved him in Maverick too, both versions Dal.
golddusterrolex360 0 Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) Some more Rockford trivia: There is a silver Vega notchback that appears in nearly every episode, either parked on the street, shown behind them while driving, must have belonged to one of the crew. Also, the violet blue colored Vega that he banged up in a semi truck chase appears in a couple more episodes too. Guess they recycled cars just like the Dukes of Hazzard. Makes sense, it was a low budget series relying mostly on the talent of the writers and actors. Since I am the same age now that he was when he started the series I have a whole new appreciation for someone who did all the stunt work he did at his age. Derek Mc 1 Posted July 24, 2014 Another Garner fan, in Grand Prix he was incredible (IMHO) and naturally the Rockford Swagger he was such a cool dude long before Miami and pseudo Ferarri's became the norm he made F-body Firebirds cooler than the Trans Am series to me, watched in Scotland I ached for a life in a SoCal mobile home. I made it to Paradise cove and eat at Bob Morris place what a gorgeous venue the food was off the planet! in 2003, I looked at the rusty pier that Rocky used to fish from and saw the spot where they placed the scenery. It was a real life event doing that for me, as James Garner was a real icon.
trailboss99 994 Posted July 24, 2014 Damn, I hadn't heard of his passing. RIP James, you entertained a generation of young lads (and their dads). The watch looks to be a pre Carrera or an early Carrera, Jeff Stein over at On the Dash will know for sure. I can ask if you like.
