replacing a 2816 mechanism

I have a high-beat 2816 (Z2?) that I'm trying to fix with Katt. I'm not sure that it ever wound properly on a winder or on my wrist. It did wind using the crown stem, but would stop erratically during the night, then I noticed the rotor spinning rapidly when I wound it, and eventually it stopped winding altogether. I sent it to Katt, and he replaced the reverser wheels. It worked great for a couple of days, but then stopped completely. I do like the watch (it's a Breitling Seawolf replica, pictured on the left, that was advertised as a clone 2836, but turned out to be a high-beat 2816), so I'd like to consider changing out the mechanism. Katt suggested that I might be able to replace it with either a 2824 or a 2836, and that I check with the forum for some advice. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions, any experience with this, is it doable, any advice for finding a replacement mechanism on eBay.

Thanks in advance! - scott

The PoS is a a Z2 (full name SBIHRZ2), not a 2816 (neither an hi-beat 2813 as someone call it).

The one in the yellow container is a PoS for sure: the click position is an easy tell. The one in the watch seems another PoS too:

There is 0.45mm height difference between it and the 2836 (0.9mm with a 2824 so forget about it), I can't say for sure if it will fit or not.

One thing I'm sure is that the date wheel of the Z2 will not fit the 2836: it may fit the 2824, but for sure not the 2836 which has a different not-flat one.

And I can't say if the standard 2836 DW is ok for the dial date window.

This is the reason I stay far away from this movement...

By the way, you have 2 of them: can't you try to put a working one together from the 2 of them?

GenTLE - thanks so much for this! I had to look up "PoS", and found your original post while googling. I'd have to say that based on my own experience, the description is accurate :P

The picture was actually taken by Katt, one of the repair guys on the site here. My watch on the left was advertised by one of the trusted dealers here as a 2836 but turned out to be what Katt described as a high-beat 2816 or what I'm assuming is a Z2, and the watch on the right is one of his watches that he salvaged parts from (reverser wheels) to make the original repair. I had to rap it a couple of times when I got it back to get it started, and then it stopped erratically a few times after that. Once it got going smoothly, it worked fine for a couple of days, but then stopped completely after about 2 or 3 days and couldn't be wound.

So because I like the watch, what I'm hoping to do is to purchase a replacement mechanism on eBay and send the replacement mechanism and the original watch back to Katt, to have the mechanism swapped out. Some of the things I'm trying to figure out is if this can be done relatively confidently, and what replacement mechanism I should purchase (2836, 2824, another working Z2). I'm a little concerned about purchasing a replacement mechanism that won't fit the housing, given your comments about size. Also concerned about your comments concerning the date wheel. If I'm to have a date wheel that matches my Breitling clone, does that mean that I'm pretty much stuck with a Z2 mechanism in that housing? Or is there a reliable mechanism that will match the original date wheel? I guess part of my confusion here is lack of understanding about how these different mechanisms are distributed. When you go to a dealer and are looking for a particular replica, are there different versions of a replica that are made to fit different mechanisms, or are the different mechanisms just modified to fit the one housing (if that makes sense)?

Hands, dial feet supposedly the hands fit an ETA movement. The date window is the biggest concern. Katt should be able to tell you if a 2824 will fit. I have a good hunch that it will and all you will need to do is swap it over. People have swapped over SOSFs before.

I agree with NCRich. You can also ask to Rolie: I'm sure he already did the transplant so he knows which movement fits :)
