BR02-92 from Toro - Stopped

Recommended Posts

Chaps

Bought a numeral dial silver BR02 from Toro last year. Been my daily beater since, even had it waterproofed by a UK rep modder.

Little did i know that the movement inside was not an Asian ETA as paid for, but a 21J.

Noticed this when i opened up the back when it suddenly stopped this week. Hands wind, date flicks over at 12, just no life.

Toro has apologised for the wrong movement, blaming it on the factory........

He has offered to take it back and fix it. So, is it worth risking sending back from the UK to China to get it sorted??

How hard is it to obtain another movement and sort myself??

Cheers

There are a lot of horror stories about sending watches back to China. I have done it twice and whilst it took about 6 weeks, they arrived safely and were corrected as discussed. But if you can get the correct movement, for a price you're happy with, you're probably better off getting someone to do it closer to home. It can be a bit stressful sending it back to China, if you know what I mean.

I'd swap out the movement for a new one and if you don't fancy doing it yourself or can't get it done, I'd be interested in buying it from you.

Use a local modder to change movement and get a credit from Toro. Dont send to china.

The UK watchsmith i use has told me no point in swapping out, may as well buy another watch. Problem is, this watch cost me £160!

Toro has taken me for a mug i guess.

The 029 i bought from him has broken down too - but i'm paying to have that fixed as it's such a good looking piece.

nofitstate - How much are you thinking?!

Hi, You´re positive it´s a 21j? While I don´t wind mine and just pick it up and have one silent 21j and another that keeps COSC-time as soon as the winding crown is used once You know positively it´s a 21j or an ETA from the very different winding feel.

A 21j is easy to come by (ofrey/cousins) would try to do it myself or contact the modder who had it waterproofed.

Have sent 1 rep back until now to try it out - 6 days to Beijing - after a total of 23 days already on the way back (didn´t arrive yet) so this worked well and it was the first "broken one" out of 30, 2 other minor problems worked them out myself.

Just saw Your new post, fail to understand, the movement is cheap and it seems a quite easy job generally unless there are date wheel overlays etc. to do, in this case send it back.

Yup, there must be a date overlay as it's a black background with white font!

Royal Mail don't offer tracked mail to China from what i can gather?

I bought one from TORO and it is not a 21J. As an earlier poster says even without opening the back it is super easy to tell the diff when you wind it. the 21j just doesn't feel substantial and sounds "thin". This is definitely not that way at all, but I can only speak for my example which by the way I absolutely love.

Toro will certainly take care of you if you contact him

I would risk it and send it back for exchange as Toro offered it's worth the risk in this case I think.

The Tony specials of BR02 I bought looks like this

Yup, he has duped me for sure. He hasn't even offered to replace, just to repair.

Don't think he has the number version anymore though.

Who have people in the UK used to send returns back to China?

Ok, slow down here. I highly doubt Toro is trying to pull anything over on you. Its a pretty generous offer from Toro to fix a watch that you've had for close to a year. He has no way of knowing if you dropped the watch or did something reckless to cause it to stop. Please consider that when forming your opinion of Toro's response.

Next, I don't follow your watchsmith's comments...."no point in swapping out"? That is just pure nonsense. Swapping out a movement is very easy; absolutely any watchsmith could do the job in under an hour, and a brand new 2813 would cost $25 (or less) and higher end Miyota 8215 would cost maybe $40. It should be a $60 job all in.

The only thing you can be mad at Toro about is getting the 2813 mov't in the first place if you paid extra for a 2824. From the pics you posted, your mov't does look to be a 2813, not a 2824 like in digger2's post. Generally, you need to open up the caseback and verify the movement yourself, right when you receive the watch, otherwise, a bit of the onus is on you. If you let Toro know 2 days after your received the watch that the movement is wrong, he replaces it right away. When you wait 8 months, he has no idea if you swapped out the movement and are pulling one over on him.

Regardless, like I said, swap the mov't its a very easy fix.

yea sure... TDs want to rip you off $260, while risking losing business and status to hundreds/thousands of other customers :picard:

I've bought 4 of my 5 reps from him. Just disappointed tbh.

Never thought to check when I got it as that and the Pam 026 were my first ever reps. So I trusted I was getting what I paid for.

Turns out the 026 promised to be a V2 H factory isn't. It's a V1.

Oh well lesson learned I guess. I do have a cheapy 21j I can practise on, shall see if I can get that out easy enough to have a play with.

I don't get this V1 vs V2 stuff. You need to look at the watch offered and determine if the "tells" you are concerned about are addressed. The you compare your QC pics to the pics from the version offered on the site to make sure you got what was advertised. End of story.

The dealers and factories don't always have these same designations we use in the forum, so you need to study up and verify the watch you're buying is the watch you want. If you got the wrong watch and didn't sort it out in the QC pics, it's your own fault

well I had a movement issued with a 372 super clone that I got from Toro ,he told me to return it to China for repair and I return it 1 month ago and he doesn't receive it yet , but when you don't have options this is the best way instead have it in your box without any use .
