Is selling Modded watch legal?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

first of all i'm NOT TALKIG ABOUT REPLICA WATCHES.

saying that, i saw a lot of modded seikos for sale on the bay, and..

there are a lot of brands like bamford and others who are selling modded rolex, patek and high grade watches, sometimes even drastically changing dials, i read they completely reprint them sometimes.

So now, those are called "modded", with a basically new deal with the brand name on it, but.. isn't the dial fake in some way?!

Selling a modded watch is legal most places provided it is declared as such. However Rolex do not accept these modifications and if the watch goes to a Rolex Service Centre, they will likely refuse to service it or only do so provided they also replace the original parts and charge for them. There were times in the past when especially Rolex USA service centres, would simply replace aftermarket parts with service parts and charge for them without prior discussion. Most if not all these high end customisation boutiques also have their own watch smiths and service their watches for this very reason. I believe they also have to provide the guarantee.

Places like bamford will deal with servicing in house for customers.

I've modded my Rolex it's not illegal for me to own or sell it, personally couldn't give too shits about using RSC, as long as the watchmaker is using OEM parts and the skills.

So that guy I met at the gas station and have my Rolex to won't do a good job?

I think its really up to the intent of the seller and buyer. If the buyer is purposely looking for an altered piece then there's no issue. It's only an issue when a seller tries to sell a 'franken' piece and pass it off as something it really isn't.

Some people choose to sue over watches containing non oem parts, I guess thats always an option... http://www.ablogtowatch.com/watch-lover-celebrity-john-mayer-sues-bob-maron-buying-replica-rolex-pieces/

I just googled to see how that turned out, I never knew the outcome. Turns out John Mayer ended up dropping the lawsuit a year later, doing a complete u-turn and saying that he was in the wrong.

Saw that too, problems are that Mayer already has enough dough not really needing to sue his dealer alongside the issue to actually having to find a new dealer to put up with that sort of client. This picture on instagram explains the situation very good imo...

It should have been obvious he was wrong...

Vintage Rolies are a bit of an enigma you basically have 4 options and none are perfect

  1. The watch is 100% gen and working as it has been serviced RSC regularly but is no longer valuable vintage as the RSC twats replace all the parts!
  2. The watch is 100% original but doesn't work properly because you daren't send it to an RSC because they will swap out parts.
  3. The watch is working perfectly an 100% original on the outside but the inside is not original as it has had parts replaced (either non rolex or from a different rolex)
  4. The whole fucking thing is just a franken build

I totally agree. But a big part of the buying/selling experience comes down to what has been said about the watch.

If he for example was told that his purchase was NOS and it turned out to be a franken its not all that uncommon for a reaction to react as if someone who bought a rep hoping for a gen, right? Or like people here who buy swiss movements in reps and end up getting swiss parts perhaps on different bridges etc.
