With a workmate bringing me some skins back from Korea I have set to making a few more straps. Here is the work in progress.

Black Fish Skin 24/22 with single floating keeper for my PAM111 - I probably won't stitch this one.

I googled Elephant leather and found a place selling it for $45 a square foot in a multitude of colours. I might try some it sounds interesting..

I assume you mean the Elephant leather Mr Beets? It doesn't sit right with me either although the site I was on mentioned they are from animals that died naturally and money raised through the sale of the leather goes towards food and upkeep of the game park, vet bills etc...

Your work's getting better in leaps and bounds, each time I see samples.

I love the two pictured just after the IWC.

Have a bump on me.

Thanks Russ, With a 4 day on and a 4 day off schedule and it being winter and all this is perfect thing to do inside while it's cold out. They take so damn long to do I can see where every cent of a custom strap is fully justified. I'm happy the way they are turning out too.. thanks..

I had visions of it on a pilot style strap the minute you said the cloth strap it came with was crap. Thanks..

Clearly this forum is not a arena for taking the high moral ground on ethics. However elephant hide just doesn't seem right at all despite trade being legal in its skins.

I hear ya Buttons. Here is a small snippet from the site I am thinking of sourcing 1sq-ft of hide from.

Harvesting Elephant Hides Legally

The source of all African elephant skins come from culls once the elephant heard reaches destructive numbers to African tribes and nature. It’s very similar to our deer season in the United States. (Roos and Camels here in Aus too) Without culling, African tribes would loose their homes and possibly become trampled to death. Designers, manufactures, and leather enthusiasts should not feel emotional or have guilt for using this leather as we are not creating a demand rather using a by product. We deal with reputable international partners who abide by all regulations and we never sell poached hides.
