Quality of Reps vs Homage watches

Recommended Posts

Is there any consensus about whether the quality of high end reps is better than that of a equivalent looking homage watch (which I will admit I haven't seen too many of)? I'm interested in whether anyone has gotten very accurate reps then de-branded them.. Perhaps I've read too much William Gibson. Thanks so much for providing such a wealth of information.

William Gibson is a knob. A tool. A lacky. Loser. Pansy looking for attention.

Top quality Reps come with genuine reliable movements like Sea-gull and Miyota.

You can Always install Genuine ETA movements into which ever rep you wish.

Hell some quartz reps come with Genuine ETA movements.

Some homages are made with the same quality control as gens.

Contrast that with all reps being made in chinese "factories" with little quality control.

I have seen a few members "debrand" Panerais with home made or refinished dials.

As per PhillyRock, a watch is as good as its movement:

Therefore, stick a quartz in both and a rep will last as long as any homage....and a rep with a 21J will usually not last as long as.....anything else with a better movement.

With both You get the good ones and the bad ones. Many homages are weekly/badly assembled, the same goes for microbrands. I would not change a rep for a Parnis but I´d consider adding a Steinhart instead of a rep.

Within reps themselve there is a considerable (better: gigantic) difference between cheapie, middle-class or super-rep. Go for the best ones first as those are easier to buy and less research is needed in the beginning.

You could improve a rep by adding a gen dial, why would You remove the one it comes with it to something lesser (at a cost)...

IMHO, about 15% of reps have some issue whether with the mov't or the build. But the 85% that are good are much better finish and quality than similarly priced homages. You need to go for homages 50-80% more expensive to get the same finish and material quality.....BUT, your average homage is going to have an error rate more like 2% not 15%.

Perfectly summarized!

I have a quartz rep with an ETA movement and build quality combined with the reliable authentic movement sets it apart from the homages in that price range.

Thanks so much for your responses. I'm enjoying my current cheap reps and waiting for my top Speedy and Pam372 reps to escape shipping in China.
