Paul Newman Daytona - Lemon-on-gold 6263

Recommended Posts

Mr Stubbs

I was looking for an exotic Daytona replica when I found WatchFinder's listing for 6263's. I wanted Paul Newman sub-dials with the lemon yellow face on a gold case. For $258 the watch I received from Tim is beautiful, a pleasure to wear, slightly flawed, but did I say... beautiful!

Like the original, this rep uses a manual hand wind movement. In this case it is the Sea Gull movement which WF refer to as a Venus 75. Like other Sea Gulls it winds easily and crisply with a feedback that gives you confidence in it's precision construction. The only drawback is the chrono pushers are positioned symmetrically on each side of the crown, while the gen pushers are asymmetric. The chrono works perfectly, with a solid click to the engagement of the pusher and a perfect reset to zero with the opposite plunger. The Paul Newman aspect refers to the optional Art Deco-style sub dials with reference marks which are squares and lines radiating outwards.

The case itself is a work of art. The gold plating on the stainless steel is very convincing. It has a poured-on quality of finish with a color that matches my gold wedding band perfectly. The case diameter is 37 mm, which is small by contemporary style but is comparable to the genuine.

The outer tachymetre is printed from the backside onto a clear plastic bezel insert which looks cool, but time will tell how durable it is.

Less convincing is the bracelet. This is the hollow link version, and while the plating is satisfactory, the construction is utterly terrible. I removed one link to size the bracelet, but this meant filing and matching one of my screwdrivers to precisely fit the plated gold screw... which promptly stripped and required prying the link open with a sharp and sturdy blade. Each link has about five microscopic components, and I now understand why every Daytona replica I see on M2M sale has a strap instead of a bracelet! The links are all extremely loose, and the clasp itself is cheaply constructed of thin steel with an embossed (not engraved) Rolex insignia in the folding components, and poorly matched plating on the outside clasp.

The watch is very convincing despite the flaws of the bracelet. I noticed another middle-aged well-dressed gent checking it out while my wife and I were standing in line to see Mission: Impossible 5. After one week of constant winding and wearing it hasn't lost any noticeable time and the chrono continues to work as intended. I was worried that an all-gold watch would make me feel self-conscious (even though I usually wear full size PAM's and Omegas) but the 37mm size feels just right for a throwback to the 70's and 80's when I was a young professional who could never afford the genuine article. :)

SO this replica version as sourced by Tim at WatchFinder is what it is: an affordable replica which may not be very close to the genuine, but should last for years of enjoyment and will be considerably improved with the addition of an appropriate strap. I'm thinking something in a genuine lizard or alligator... :)

Ohhh quite lovely Stubbsy :) There is no better watch IMO than a vintage Daytona. Your model is just a touch bigger than a true 37mm, but especially on PNs, that accommodates better sub dial spacing, and in the end, sub dial spacing is what its all about

Now that you know the pain of those goddamn rep riveted bracelets, you can truly enjoy wearing it :) Good health to you sir! :beer2:

oh wow, i'm actually considering ordering this exact watch. All I see is the silver/white everywhere so its nice to finally see the gold/cream i was looking at!

DEFINITELY throw it on a black lizard strap or a nice black horween strap with cream stitching :-)

Do you have all the sub-dials working on this one? Many 6263 come with hand winding movements have the sub-dial@6 faux.

Yes the sub-dial at 6 is frozen in place. I also own the Omega moon watch Sea-Gull ST19 replica with an unfrozen sub-dial that follows the hour hand movement. There is a large trade in modifying the moonies to freeze that hand and install a raised plexi crystal... The same as this 6263 uses. I'm happy to have the dial at 6 already frozen. :)

That may be. I'm happy to pay more to WatchFinder because Tim and Dan have gone to amazing lengths for me to ensure I get the best example possible. They corrected flaws which I couldn't even see in the QC pics, where other dealers may not. I've passed the point of looking for the least expensive. :)

Man.this.was.a.sweet.pickup!!

Like.Ish.said,this.larger.39mm.version.has.proper.subdial.placement.

The.larger.39mm.also.has.closer.to.gen.font.size.dial.lettering...

so.while.the.37mm.are.cheaper.at.200USD,I.think.this.larger.version.

in.many.ways.comes.closer.to.the.spirit.of.the.gen.

I.thought.I.had.my.Paul.Newman.cravings.already.fulfilled.with.my.stainless.6241...

But.now.I.wonder...This.gold.PN.is.absolutely.gorgeous

...it.looks.like.more.business.for.KeNnY.after.all

Enjoy.this.beauty...definite.WINNER

This is 39mm? I thought OP said it was 37mm? I haven't bought a vintage Daytona because of the small size. 39mm would be great! If that doesn't include the crown.

I think Ish is right as usual; this Daytona is very likely the 39mm version. I have a 39mm stainless Daytona, but I've never seen the oversized Daytona in gold. Looks AWESOME IMO :D

This beauty has symmetrically placed pushers, where the 37mm gen has asymmetric placement. That's the biggest giveaway. The lugs are consequently a little thicker than the gen by a few mm. Also, the subdials look perfect without bleed, and this is unusual for an off the shelf rep unless slightly oversized at 39mm.

While it does wear larger than the gen 37mm, the 39mm is not huge by any stretch. While I love my gen sized 6263s and 6241, I like having my larger 39mm as an option from time to time. As a bonus, when I care, the chronos work without any frozen subdials.

37mm is why I haven't bought one of the vintage ones. Awesome to know that there are 39mm ones. Is that 39mm with crown or without?
