5513 PCG mod - UPDATED 4/26

Recommended Posts

I bought several of these vintage subs with the idea I'd try different things with them. I liked the look of the pointy crown guards and thought at worst I'd screw up a case. I also played with the dial since I was bored cooking Christmas dinner. It has an ETA, Cousins Tropic 39 plexi, the case has had a TON of dremeling and filing and sanding and polishing. I was going to just age the dial and relume, but damn if I didn't like the way the aging colored the stock lume. Leave it like that for a while. Pictures.

Very nice!

I'm about to start on mine so here's a few questions:

which diameter is the dial?

Did you do the pcg mod with the dremel or using files?

Wouldn't T19 be the correct plexi for this reference?

Thanks, the dial is 26mm. I used a drill press to drill out the lugs, a dremel to roughly get the CGs to shape and size, jewelry files to finish shaping, wet sandpaper, and a polishing wheel to finish. The polishing wheel makes your life much easier.

There is no one T19, they come in all different shapes and sizes. I have bought a lot of plexis ( I have 5 different T19s in my box)and I like the T39 best on this. It fits this case perfect and I like the profile. It is much heavier than most T19s and it looks great. This is the Cousin's T39, I can't speak to any other T39.

Nice. Bracelet seems to not have that weird link by lugs. Source?

I'd say it was Silix but I've gotten more than one type from them. I got one a while back with the weird link, but the newer ones came with this. This particular one came on one of the new vintage models, actually the white dialed sub. I asked Marvellous Replica to get it on rivet and this was the one he supplied. Those new vintage use the same case and bracelet as the Silix 6538.

Thanks mate, I followed your advice about the 6538 plexi and I was very happy. I'll do the same this time too, T39 it is :)

 Here is the difference. Rather striking on the watch.

Looking good. I'm hoping this was posted for comments? The one thing I might consider is spraying a light coat of matte or semi-gloss to try and even the look of the dial surface and blend/eliminate some of those blotches around the indices ( most obvious in pics #2 and 6 ). I'm working on the same one now!

 Sure comments are more than welcome. Those blotches and "radium burns" were what I liked. Like how the original lume could degrade a dial over time or a leak could discolor or mar one. Funny how tastes vary. Everything I do is reversible. All I have to do is run that dial under water and it is all gone. Coffee, tea, and watercolors are about all I use anymore. I"ll redo this dial when I run out of projects. Smooth dials are easy, interesting patterns are neat and kind of occur by accident. And you really can't see any of that stuff without magnifying lenses or macro photos. I really was interested in was the crown guards. Getting that shape right is difficult. Thanks for the comments.

Just finished drilling the lugs, installed the new Athaya crown, and massaged the case while making the PCG's. I started some of the dial work and I'm waiting on a couple of T19's to see which has the best profile. Swiss ETA on the way from ST so I hope this turns out to be my all time number 3 keeper! 11610/1016/5513

Looks good! You know I never noticed until I did this one that there is a little rubber oring on the case at the base of the plexi. You can see it in your photo too.

This is what you did Christmas day... I'm so jelly (jealous) as my daughter would say. The results look great on the case, the dial is too aged (but I like the lume color).

Yeah, it is but it'll wash off. I'm going to eventually clean the dial and hands and relume with vintage lume. That's the fun of it, you can change it in an hour or two if you don't lacquer it. Gives me something to tinker with.....

Well, I got tired of the messy dial. I saw this online and I liked it:

Huge improvement! I really like the bezel. Did you fade that a bit more or is it just the pictures?
