Buggered 1016 Space-Dweller

Recommended Posts

Arism

My beloved franken Space-Dweller was running quite fast over the last few weeks (~+5min a day) so I sent it in for a service at my local watch smith; who has previously done some good work. Until now.

When I received the watch after it's supposed service; I noticed the lume indices had been damaged. Specifically the 10 and 1 o'clock positions.

It looks like they have tried to put the lume pieces back together(unsuccessfully). This already has me quite annoyed as the dial came from Ingod44 and for those who know, has disappeared from existence. Unfortunately Yuki's dial does not compare in quality.

The more worrying item I found was that the watch runs but always stops at 11:01.

At first I thought it was due to low power reserve, so I hand wound the watch and set it at approximately 10:55. Only to find it stopped at 11:01. Second hand was still going as the movement inside is a non-hacking ETA 2472.

Any ideas what may be wrong? I think some of the teeth might be damaged/missing.

And furthermore, any recommendations on who can repair/salvage the damage that has been done?

I'm based in Asia but open to sending worldwide for repair.

Thanks in advance for the help guys!

My Space-Dweller in better times

This sucks....Sorry man!

Who did you take it to? Maybe need to avoid them?

I suspect you could be right about damaged teeth....

I believe there are many reasons why it may be stopping but damaged teeth is only one of them, I've had a couple that have simply been due to the second hand binding on the crystal.

It's really disappointing when we take our beloved goods to so-called experts only for them to fuck them up.

I do most of my own work on as much as possible as I learned at a young age that I can fuck things up just as easily as the experts and do it for free.

I think that dial will need to go to a REAL expert to restore it to as before so hopefully one of our vintage experts will set you in the right direction.

Good luck with your special watch.

Thanks for the response guys.

Hopefully will get some suggestions on solutions to get the Space-Dweller up and running again.

Ouch!! That's a real shitter :(

Why don't you take it back to the repair shop and complain?

Already did! Unfortunately they've taken the attitude of a former member from Finland.... :frusty:

That's truly disturbing. But it doesn't appear to be that hard to repair. The lume is very thin, really just painted on. You'd just match the color using watercolors and a water based lume. Carefully pick off the damaged lume and apply the matched lume with an oiler.

With the movement out you can see if it is binding. If the movement is messed up I'd just put a new one in. Valuable watch for a rep.

Agree, Kenny probably is the best choice for the dial.

Not sure about the movement: a TD for repair is in UK, but I'd not send the watch to EU as it is, the customs, you know... Unless you agree with the UK (where the customs are less strict) tech that he then sends the dial to Kenny.

Send the dial only and he's still got to find someone to assemble. Could easily end up fucked up again. He has to find someone to do it all, or I would if it was me. Find someone in the UK to transship.

And Pickle its a frickin rep dial. Yes its an Ingod dial. The whole watch is worth under a grand, less now. They are all toys.

Are you reading the same thread as the rest of us? I know it's a rep dial, but I chalange you to find another of the same quality, these things don't come around very often and are worth preserving ;)

When I see the lume on the dial going off, it probably will after time get off by its self on other places also :(

Fix could be possible to do , but maybe at the end best to redo whole lume. Depending how the lume really holds on the dial.

and in the time also relume hands the same shade of lume how the dial is, so it will be uniform.

Does the movement stop at 11:01 both AM and PM? If so I'd be looking at a center wheel or hour wheel problem, most probably the hour wheel. Parts for the old ETAs like yours can still be had in most cases and of course there are salvage movements around too. I've got a big pile of salvage ETAs myself that I've ended up with over the last few decades.

I would have Rolex addict fix the whole thing Lume and Movement at same time , he has never failed me. Or just sell the whole thing to me at an obscene low price, Thank You and have a bright sunshiny day! :)

Just listen to this man ^^^^

Then drop him a pm and post him the watch

He is the best person to fix the lume and he'll be able to stop it stopping too you'll have it back in a month better than ever

And in the meantime go back to the guy who fucked it up and put a brick through his windows
