6497 stem issue

Recommended Posts

I received a pam 111 today running a 6497 movement with a stem issue.

When trying to push it back into the winding position it is very difficult to get it to pop back into that position. The crown is of the sprung loaded type and just seems to compress and not push the stem into the winding position.

Some times it will pop back in and I've had better luck at quickly closing the crown guard to get it to work, but more often than not when you open the crown guard the crown springs back and you are still in winding mode.

I've ruled any keyless issue out (I think?) as I tried fitting a longer crown and stem from another watch (pam 372) and that works perfectly.

I've compared that parts of the stems that work the keyless of the 111 and 372 to each other and they are the same length. The only difference between the two is that the 372 is an overall longer stem coming from a bigger watch and therefor can be pushed into winding mode without pushing up against the crown tube before it has done so. It is also a solid crown with no spring action, so can be pushed in without compressing, though this really doesn't matter as the crown is a good few mm away from the case when in the winding position.

My guess then is the length of the stem from the inside face of the crown is slightly to short so doesn't have enough length to pop the keyless into winding mode? Does this sound correct and can the stem be unscrewed from the crown slightly giving it more length so that it can be pushed into the winding position?

If so, how is the stem normally fixed into the crown? I can see it is screwed in but is there any type of thread lock used normally by the rep makers and and how would I go about unscrewing it?

Thanks.

After all that the problem seems to be solved. The crown has to be pushed back into the winding position by the crown lever but now seems to be working every time after going through a few time setting to winding setting cycles. Guess things were a little tight in the brand new keyless earlier....
