Question for the rolex experts

Recommended Posts

Keith1969

My recent acquisition of the noob v7 dssd has me thinking about gens. I looked at the movement and it looks pretty similar to a gen 3135. My question is will a gen winding assembly fit on the sa3135 movement? The sa3135 winder seems a little coarse, notchy and loud. My Bulova with the eta 2824 is buttery smooth winding and almost inaudible. I am willing to purchase a gen winder from eBay if it will fit the rep movement. Thanks for the help.

Have it serviced if you want a smoother and more reliable movement. Trying to fit expensive gen parts in a rep movement is a non sense.

If you really want to go to that route then best option is to get a Yuki movement and have it serviced and installed.

What I really want is to put a gen 3135 movement in it but those are quite expensive . I would pay a grand for a good running gen 3135.

Thanks for the response but do you actually know if the gen winder will fit? Thanks again.

But you won't be able to buy a separate gen movement alone from anywhere, those guys are only to be found in gen watches.

I see separate gen 3135 movements every day on ebay. They sell for around 600 bucks but need a complete service which will probably be a hefty cost because of replacement parts that will be required for refurbishment.

As to me wanting a gen...lol! Doesn't everyone?! If I did own a gen dssd I would be in the same boat I am in with my other watch. I also own a gen 1966 omega speedmaster professional. I sent it to Omega and had them go through it (cost me close to 1500.00). It is a great watch but I am worried every time I wear it. You know that I will bang it against something and break it. Best thing for me is a nice rep...a nice rep with a gen movement would be ideal! Thanks anyway! I will keep my eyes open for a gen 3135. I just missed one on craigslist. It was a 1990 datejust for 1500.00. Sure it was ugly (champagne dial...yuck!) but it had the movement I was looking for.

I take it from everyone's lack of responding to the question that no one here really knows whether or not a gen 3135 winding assembly will fit directly on the sa3135. Guess I will just have to order one and see for myself (a 400.00 gamble).

Thanks for the responses...such as they have been!

On a side note this sa3135 has kept perfect time since I got it...knock on wood!

Thats not all together true. You can find a gen 3135 movement, albeit not AS common, and certainly not cheap. Not cheap enough to make it remotely worth it. However, a vintage cal 1560 etc can be had at a decent price and can make quite a franken watch for under $2-2.5k And the only point of doing that is for the correct bhp and function of the date. IMHO it doesnt make much sense to go past a Yuki on a 5-6 digit franken.

From what I've read, the SA3135 can be a ticking timebomb and you probably don't want to sink that kind of money into it. The SH3135 (I believe is the same as the Yuki 3135) is an almost complete full clone can take almost all of the gen parts with the exception of part of the balance (can't remember why though.)

You'll want to get in touch with either OCCB2, or Miskieped next door at RWI. They tool around with franken movements, and should be able to give you some advice.

Thanks guys. If a Yuki falls in my lap I will buy it. If a gen comes around for a grand or so I will definitely buy it as well. This is not the only rep I plan on owning and right now Rolex's are kind of my "thing" . I am looking at the GMT,the yachtmaster is a bit blingy and the Milgauss is pretty sweet ,with that green crystal (or ar coating lol!).

Peace

I am sure I'm wrong as usual, but I am still not able to find any sales posts? Can you share a link?

I think this is the movement that OP as referring to...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Gents-Rolex-Oyster-Perpetual-Datejust-Movement-3135-/352057653241?hash=item51f84577f9:g:cNUAAOSw~y9ZGKWQ

looks like it was dredged from the bottom of a lake. Not sure if it is even salvageable. I'd stick with the Yuki/SH3135 and add the gen autowind bridge. To my knowledge, the SA3135 will not accept the gen autowind bridge as it's not really a clone of the 3135, kind of it's own version of a 3135 internally with the correct specs for dimensions, hands, etc.

Look at that, I stand corrected. Not for me, but different strokes for different folks I guess

That seller has sold around four similar movements in the last couple of weeks.

I read a very lengthy write of by a fellow that acquired a movement in similar or worse condition. He refurbished it and added the necessary parts. If I remember correctly he ended up with around a thousand dollars in the movement and parts (he was a hobbiest watchsmith so this did not include his labor).

The best deal for me will be to find a good movement in an older case that hasn't been well cared for (a model not popular any longer or a bad color dial etc). I have seen 3135 complete watches hovering around the 2,000.00 range. Could buy that and use the movement then sell off the parts I have left over.

I did a good bit of searching last night and couldn't even locate a yuki for sale. I haven't checked to see if I have any response from forum members.

Thanks for the responses.

On a side note the dssd is still keeping perfect time. I hand wound it all the way till it slipped which was kind of loud and abrupt. Funny thing is the automatic wind is now as quiet as a church mouse and smooth as well. May have been a little piece of metal or something in between the rotor and the watch movement. Whatever it was it is running better than before.

I may end up just sending this watch to a trusted watchsmith for servicing and being satisfied.

Also I am considering getting one of the forum members that does lume to relume it as well. The lume looks great fully charged but really fades after 45 min or so. This morning there wasn't even a hint of brightness left and that was only 6 hours of being in the dark.

And that one on ebay is a grand more than I am willing to pay.

As for salvageable. ..everything is salvageagle to some extent. Whether or not it makes sense economically is the issue for me. If I locate a gen within my budget I will let you guys know.

Until then I will be keeping a,"watch"ful eye on the sa3135.

Did you see my post in your other thread? I posted the links to the retailer to purchase a new Yuki. The site is crownandskull.com or contact tickleshoes over on RWI.

I went to crown and skull and didn't see a thing about how much the Yuki is or how to order it. Maybe I was supposed to use some external link or something. I will check again. Thanks.

Sa3135 in its as shipped to me condition (in my noob v7 dssd) still has not gained or lost a minute. I realize that this is short term for reviewing the movement but so far it has been near perfect. Seems to have over 48hr reserve to boot!

Two months have gone by and the sa3135 movement in as delivered, unadjusted, unserviced condition loses about a minute every two weeks. I would call that outstanding performance!
