First rep - advice on model and style please

Recommended Posts

iluvbrownale

G'day all.

Once I'd decided to find a rep, I joined this forum - what a find! Some really helpful and enthusiastic people on here so hopefully some of you can help out.

I have a genuine Tag that I wear daily (bought as a reward for buying out my business partner years ago!) and like the idea of some other watches without having to invest money that is going into a house build i'm doing. I'd like to think once I've worn a few reps I will decide which one I will buy genuine.....but I may just be kidding myself!

So, that's my story. I'm trying to decide on a Rolex rep, and forgive my ignorance here, but I like the Sea Dweller / Submariner look but don't know the difference? I have read so much on the forum I think I have confused myself at times. I wouldn't like to spend more than $300 at this point so I know BK and TJ (?) appear to have the most accurate reps but price wise it sits higher than I want to. Who do you think also does them well? It seems the date and magnification part are areas that are hardest to replicate so are there any other designs or versions that don't have these?

Also, am I best off sticking to stainless and black face? I am tempted by Pro Hunter versions but worried these will scratch and look tatty. Has anyone got a Pro Hunter they can attest to?

Is there one model/type eg 16600 any more likely to be closest to gen than another?

And finally, for ten points, in time, can I buy a genuine dial, and genuine bezel insert (not sure if correct term - the coloured bit with the numbers on them around the face) to replace the rep?

Whew.....

thanks in advance,

Probably the Russians. But the US fast attack class is tops too.

just browse a few TDs sites until you find the one you want.

i dont understand why this is so difficult for some people.

not tryin to be mean here. do you go up to strangers at clothing stores and ask them to help you pick out clothes because you cant tell the difference between the styles?

submariner = the classic tool watch. there are literally 100s of different versions of this. you can go with the new ceramic versions which i honestly think are ugly.

the classic aluminum bezel ones. the magnification is correct on most decent rolex reps.

seadweller = submariner with a thicker crystal and no cyclop over the date. also has the helium escape valve. otherwise, its the same. again. classic alum bezel version and ceramic version.

Here we go again. Use the search box in the top right. IMO I would go with the DSSD

Read, read, and then read some more. As already stated, use the search box and you'll find literally hundreds of threads that will provide all the information you'll ever want to know.

thanks for the explanation as to the difference between models.

As to 'why this is so difficult', put yourself in my shoes for a second, or your own when you entered a world completely alien to you; I've spent a good few hours the last few days reading stacks of posts and trying to work out all the jargon, and there is SO much choice, of course it would pay to ask experts such as the people who have replied, for a little hand up. Be flattered :) , It is after all the newbie corner!

And yes, I absolutely WOULD ask people who look like they know a thing or two in a store and ask them if they could help me pick out something. I used to own a few stores and it was pretty cool when some regulars would offer advice to people picking out their first pieces. That's what community is all about, hence, I'm here, cap in hand, asking for advice. Neither do I want to sound overtly defensive, and I appreciate the replies chaps. Many customers would want to get into a brand and we'd all have 'go to' pieces that we knew they would love and would become a cornerstone of their wardrobe. I suppose that's what I'm asking - what are the classic, can't go wrong, Rolex reps that people suggest?

And what are the thoughts on these black finished ones? Do they wear ok?

oh and just on that, back in the cold war days, the US was convinced the USSR had new undetectable subs. They had gone looking for them, and because they couldn't find any (there weren't any there....) became convinced that Russia had superior technology and got into a right panic about it. There's a lesson in there!

We all were in your shoes. Some of us made posts like yours. Some of us rushed to buy a rep we wanted and got a shit one. Some of us read and did the research. Learned what makes what design. Found ones we liked and then bought them.

Take your time. Don't rush it. Do some research and then when you think you're ready, buy the watch you want.

Don't make the post that's been made a million times already.

Do a search. You could have gotten all the answers to your questions in the rolex section.

Well, as it happens, the forum get at least one of these posts a day. And 9 times out of 10, they're asking who has the best sub....happens so often, its a bit of a joke.

If you want a serious answer, don't get a Rolex. They are the most recognized watch in the world and attract more negative attention than positive. Whether its real or not, people will always ask -- in the airport, at the coffee shop, everywhere -- it gets tiresome. If you want a high quality rep, that is classic and will garner positive attention get a Panerai. There are tons of choices, but maybe a PAM 111 is the equivalent to the Submariner. Add in maybe another 2-3 straps and you have a watch for any occasion.

Check out TC in the TDs section. Buy his v6 Submariner.

There. You now have a nice (fake) Rolex.

Continue to read; soon you'll come across names and terms such as "Cartel", "1680", "aged insert", "puffy lume" and "Rolex Addict".

Then you'll be moving towards having a *really* nice (fake) Rolex.

Get a Deepsea Seadweller! :) Once you get one you'll understand why you need it! :D. It's a robust watch, little thicker and bigger than a sub but still very comfortable.

Is there anything to be confused about? :) :lmao:

OP Question: what are the classic, can't go wrong, Rolex reps that people suggest?

Answer (s):

  • Get a Deepsea Seadweller
  • Check out TC in the TDs section. Buy his v6 Submariner
  • don't get a Rolex
  • a PAM 111 is the equivalent to the Submariner
  • Take your time
  • all the answers to your questions in the rolex section

I´ll add mine: get a classic 16600 BP Seadweller as the first - can´t go wrong with that and it´s below $300 shipping included.

This is fun, as You see each of us has his own opinion - and nobody proposed a BK -sub-C yet (secret code.....) or..... :ttiwwop:

Some fun replies here - thanks folks for the smiles! Used to be active on a couple of totally unrelated forums and forgot what the noob thing was actually like. Big fish in a small pond and all that.

Honestly, even having a fairly run of the mill Tag has plenty of people asking if it's real or fake. I tell people I don't kiss and tell. I really don't care what they decide! I do like the asthetic of the Rolex and it will amuse me when people get interested in it for the wrong reasons (because they think it's expensive). I can live with it. It's one of those 'itch I need to scratch' things and this way, if I end up disliking it, I will have learned before dropping $5k.

I was concerned this had all been asked before - not shallow enough to think I'd be the first! I think I'd read so many pages it was all becoming a blur. Once I've narrowed it down (thinking Sub with blue bezel and dial - see, progress!) I will see where that takes me. I guess I had worked out there are a couple of top end reps from BK and the like, but all were $500+ and I'm tight, so was just wondering out loud, who had the best $300 version. Can't decide if I really want a black one though.

BTW, I searched again for some info, this time not using Tapatalk.....which was returning zero results e.g. 'PAM 292'...using PC....okay, NOW I see some results!

And just when I thought I'd narrowed it down, I'm thinking PAM 292 in black, GMT Pro Hunter, and the list expands. Familiar...??!!

Welcome from the UK mate. Good to see you are still here after taking the standard replies on the chin :D

As always it comes down to personal preference - find something you like, read up on it, find a TD, read up on their reviews and go for it.

There are plenty of makes and models to discover on your journey so don't worry about trying to nail every question in the first order.

I would also go Classic BP Sea Dweller.

Happy hunting!

Hi mate and welcome!

Sounds like you're voicing the feelings of many a noob when they get into this hobby (me included). Enthusiasm bubbly over like a badly wired kettle, you just don't know which way to turn. You know pretty much what you're after, how much you want to spend but at the same time you want to get the most for your bucks.

The best advice I think I've read so far was simply if you like it, buy it!*

* only after reading every noob posting there is and always from a TD!

Hope your search ends well and don't forget to show us the pics!

Pick a rep you like and buy it. Maybe M2M is a good place to browse. That way you don't have the wait and somebody else has done the QC for you.
