Gen v 21J Rep - Omega Speedmaster Professional comparison

Recommended Posts

nuvolablue

Hi all

Here is my picture comparison of Speedy Gen v Rep. Hope you find it useful.

The pieces:

Rep: I purchased this a few months ago via M2m.

Auto 21J with faux Chrono subdials. I have no idea what each subdial is meant to denote on this rep. The 3 and 9 subdials can be 'reset' to 12 by pressing the Chrono pushers. The 6 subdial cannot be reset. Running seconds are the Chrono hand. 42mm diameter.

Gen: 1998 model Ref: 3570.50

Hesalite crystal; Calibre 1861; closed caseback.

Diameter: 42mm

On to the comparison. Gen is on bracelet and has patina dial

Notice differences in shape of crystal, shape of lugs, and subdial contours and of course spacing.

The bezel of rep is slightly wider than the gen.

Compare the thickness of cases; gen is much thinner and has curved lugs. Also notice the gen's more defined contours on polished section of lugs.

Notice domed crystal of gen. Rep is slightly raised but not really domed.

Notice Rep has applied logo and 'happy feet' which apparently is a dead giveaway as the feet should be flat on applied logos.

Rest of font design looks quite similar to gen.

I hope you all found this useful; it's my first attempt at this type of review/comparison so do let me have your comments and feedback.

The sub-dials has always been the give away for me on the Man on The Moon watch.

What is the reserve like on the Rep vs Gen?

Hesalite crystal is the only way to go one a genuine one IMHO.

Agree about the subdials but this one and the quartz models aren't that bad.

Regarding the reserve on my 21J rep it is pretty good, over 24 hours. I use it as a daily beater and it's quite impressive.

Yes I agree on hesalite. Even on the gen the sapphire crystal version just doesn't look right in terms of how it bulks up the case and crystal. BTW, crystal on rep is acrylic.... Forgot to mention that.

From what I have seen all of the Reps sub-dials are off. This may be as good as it gets. I would wear it without worry. None of the Omega owners I have ever run across could tell a fake from a real anyway. Rolex owners on the other hand will call out a fake as soon as it enters the building without even seeing it.

I hate to rain on your parade but you may as well have compared your gen Speedy to a rep Breitling Bentley - the 21j rep Speedy is probably as bad as Speedy reps get...

You can get a pretty good rep Speedy with the same type of hand wind chrono movement as the gen, which would have been a much better comparison to make.

Well said Del!

To the OP:

Check out another review of a much better version of the one in your comparison!

I´ve been on the fence with that one from Mary for some time, anyone here that can shed some light on it as how it holds up for some time ?

I have to agree with you there. That is a better looking watch IMHO. The whole point of getting the Man on The Moon watch is for the manual winding aspect :giggle: :giggle: . The great looking watch is just a good bonus. I can't wait to get me one.

Agreed, but I do not own any other rep of the speedy. With the best will in the world I can't compare, let alone provide a picture comparison of a rep I don't have.

I agree that the rep numbered edition is probably the most gen like version there is, but it still suffers from the sub dial spacing issue. And from a personal point of view I prefer the 42mm version with straight hands and and arrow tip on Chrono hand; I have lusted after this version for years and it's definitely the more archetypal one.

If I couldn't have the gen...... I would rather wear a flawed rep of a gen I love than a super rep of a gen that I don't.

Numbered edition is good if you like the style of hands and the smaller 39.5mm case size.

If it's the Moonwatch 42mm like mine then check out the quartz version; you will be compromising on movement but that is countered by a better representation of case shape and dial layout. There was one on M2M just earlier this week if you want to check out the pics.

Thanks for the obvious clarification.

My point was that the comparison is meaningless - you are comparing apples and pears. The whole point of doing a rep v gen comparison is to show how accurate (or otherwise) the rep version is when compared with the gen watch being copied. Comparing the rep with a completely different gen is as much use as a trap door on a canoe...

It's not "completely different". Plus, I think you will find that none of the 42mm manual wind versions accurately replicate the case size or dial layout.

My one is okay (not great, I agree) in those departments. Obviously the 21J movement is wrong. As I said earlier I think quartz versions also do that well.

I agree it would be great to see the manual wind comparison .....

"A" for effort but given the quality of rep used for comparison...

This St19 manual wind dial version approach to the incorrect spacing is interesting-smaller subdials to keep the hour indicators full length:

Weird that with all the good reps now that can look as good as the real deal, they still can't get the Speedmaster reps to look right.
