How To: TAG Link Bracelet Adjustment

For the sake of this discussion, let's say you've just bought your first TAG Link replica. And it's a cheapie.

Let's say you're me, in other words. 

Here's a quick way to adjust those strange y-shaped links.

You will need a bracelet pin tool and a small screwdriver.

 

To remove these links, you must begin where the bracelet joins the clasp. Each half of the bracelet is connected to the clasp by a pressed in bracelet pin.

The pin only slides out in one direction.

Look at the hole on each side of the link. Inside you can see a 'smooth' end of a pin. the opposite side looks like a tiny screw head.

Push on the smooth end to extract the split pin. Thanks to black263 for pointing this out.

 

Here is the pin tool pushing out the split pin:

When the pin is loose, you can pull it out. I left it part way in.

 

The bracelet end will look like this:

 

Each Y-shaped link is actually two halves. The right half will slide off like this:

 

The pin which you can see on the right side is actually a tiny HOLLOW screw.

It has a screwdriver slot on one end, and internal threads on the other end.

 

To remove the LEFT side of a link, unscrew the hollow screw:

 

The hollow screw which retains the left side is VERY tiny:

Remove as many links as you need. I had to remove four links, so I removed two from each side of the bracelet.

When you have removed the links, reconnect to the clasp using the split pin. Lubricating the split pin will help it go back together.

You can tap the pin back in with a plastic watch hammer or use a pin press.

 

And we're done. Now it's time for a whisky.

I'm not arguing at the effort he put in. There was a lot of work there. Just pointing out that those split pins are a specific design, and if you want to remove them, they're meant to be pushed out in one direction. The "fat" bit next to the split end is the bit that hold the pin in place Once that is pushed out, the rest of the pin is a simple finger-tight or less fit, and can simply slide out. Going back in, the fat bit goes last, and you can get everything lined up before a couple of taps to lock the pin in place. Going the other way, you need to push or tap the pin all the way through.
