NCRich 13,748 Posted February 17, 2017 So I'm looking at ways to mod a 1680 and atgm sends me a pic of one he likes. A gen that recently sold for some $$$$. I look at it and think its pretty great. Then I start looking at it like I might if it were a modded rep. Hmmm....those CGs? I don't know they look a little stubby. The lume match is atrocious And a blind squirrel should be able to apply lume better than this. Yeah, maybe I'm getting a bit critical.

Genius 281 Posted February 17, 2017 Just shows you are getting good at modding when you look at a gen and think "I could have done better!" keep it up

In my humble opinion some of the reps I have seen yours included look far batter than the gens out there. I like my vintage stuff to have that minty well looked after look, But I think I am alone lol.
GC 4,486 Posted February 17, 2017 My cartel has better matching lume on markers/hands/pip out of the box. I zoomed in to the pic of the gen's applied lume on the markers... Yikes.

I know you say "out of the box" but have you done any mods between then and this shot? Looking great, very tempting... From Trusty?

It is however an older version from PT. The new Jkf cases are even better around the crown guards, but the dial are less accurate (it's a trade off).
Martijn85 0 Posted February 17, 2017 Looks ok to me, my dad's sub is almost 30, and its lume looks the same.
jdog 1 Posted February 17, 2017 The lume from that time period in many cases "shrank" and dissipated over time. Also the hands and dial were not always lumed from the same place, hence a lot of missmatch over the years even though original to the watch. And the cases were shaped by hand, especially the guards. Vintage pieces are very interesting in the little changes over time and wide variety.

stüssi 0 Posted March 29, 2017 (edited) My cartel has better matching lume on markers/hands/pip out of the box. I zoomed in to the pic of the gen's applied lume on the markers... Yikes. this one looks amazing! What are the specs?? Edit: Nevermind, just saw the post above. Pitty that the new cartel dials aren't as good anymore, this insert looks better too I think Edited March 29, 2017 by stüssi

My 1665 hands became "non-Lume" after 30 years and the dial still glowed faintly. I just had new hands put on it and now there's a huge mismatch. It's just the way it is. Tools are Tools. My 60's vintage Sub has lume that looks like a drunken monkey put it on. Remember that these were built as *good tools*, not "luxury goods". They were not all perfect when new.
