Astronomy watches?

Recommended Posts

mikejuli

Want to thank you guys for this forum. Probably saved me from making a huge mistake at some of the bogus sites. I am a fan of astronomical watches and was wondering if I could get some feedback on if anyone has bought? Was it a good decision? Recommendations?

I had my eyes on a Ulysse Nardin moonstruck but it appears that none are available anymore even though on several TD sites. Bummer.

Will probably see if Patek's skymoon is still available.

This brings me to a question, but is there a way to request a certain model? I Really like the moonstruck. Are there dealers who also build watches on request? If so would you say this is a good option or one to avoid?

Welcome to the club!

Send the dealer a picture of the watch you are interested in, they will tell you if available/in stock. On request builds, especially of watches with astronomical complications, are highly unlikely unless using stock parts in which case there are modders you could reach out to.

I got a Patek Skymoon rep for a friend, lots of fun for a quartz, but of course a few tells compared to the gen :)

Please please please read a lot first to ensure the correct expectations: http://www.rwg.bz/board/index.php?showtopic=7456

Thanks elp. I did send pics.. Mostly the pics that were on their own websites but sounds like they have been without for a while.

I will try sending some pics of a few other interesting celestials in the off chance they have items not showing on the website.

Do rep watches have a time frame for production? In other words, if a watch were made 10 years ago would the reps be made at the same time and sell until gone? I ask this because it may save me the trouble of looking for watches unless the original is relatively new on the market.

It kind of depends mate. Some watches just get discontinued when they don't sell.

But, what you're looking for is not really found in a reps that often. A Skymoon might be cool, but the watch is huge (really huge) and all those complications can cause issues within the movement.

But at the end, just get what you like!

Forget about rules around time frames for production. There is a very artisanal approach to the production of reps - some are popular and often reproduced and improved (allegedly) - primarily some Pams, Rolex & Breitlings, other have limited timeframes. Even popular models may not be resurrected for ages. If you see something you like, better snag it, 'cause it may disappear in an eyeblink.

I'd keep hunting for the moonstruck. They used to be available not so long ago
