So How Do You Solve a Problem Like Platinum Markers?

Recommended Posts

Duzza

As many will know, the bezel markers in the Ceramic insert of Noob Rolexs are less than great. Ever since they cottoned on to the fact the engravings were actually platinum rather than white there's been issues.

The latest batch of Subs, DSSDs etc have a reasonable stab at it but under anything other than bright lighting they turn a dark grey and are barely visible.

Step up Steve from Taiwan at our sister forum RWI and his now famous 'spongebob mod' He is offering a mod that actually solves the issue and turns your noob insert in to gen spec with re chamfered engravings and actual platinum plating! Cool!! He has my DSSD insert now and I've detailed the process below:

Firstly the engravings are re chamfered to tidy them up but also to make them slightly wider as per gen.

Then a buffer is applied to the markers

Next up an inorganic undercoat that helps achieve the exact colour match to the gen platinum

Next up is the platinum layer, I'll update once I receive the pics from Steve!

Apparently some people on the forums regard obsessive compulsive disorder as a badge of honour in their pursuit for the perfect solid end links lol

So Steve completed my bezel insert, here's a shot of the batch that mine was in. He was using a new platinum that he was expecting to even more closely match the genuine article.

And one from my batch next to gen 116710, looks great

And my insert just before shipping back to me

I will update again once it's installed back on my James Cameron :)

I used this for my GMT IIc and Deep Sea... Gave me the color I was looking for.... I did have to re-paint the bezel on the Deep Sea because I wore it almost every day for a year....

It looks great and If this is a "permanent" solution, then that's even better...

It was cheaper than a gen insert :)

If you imagine the price of pure platinum as used here.

$195 includes return shipping to be fair but yes it's not cheap
