Big Pilot (fake PR) unassembly - Many pics

Recommended Posts

GenTLe

This week I wanted to fix the fake PR hand of my BP (putting it at full 7 days indication) and, in the meantime to service the movement inside.

Since there's no "Lubrification / assembly chart" for this movement, I took a lot of pics during the disassemble phase, in order to then reassemble it in the correct way.

I am sharing here those pics so that, if someone wants to do something similar, he can be helped and use these as references.

First a couple of pics of the fake PR hand fix. It is glued with some gummy glue directly on the dial. There is no fake pinion but just a hand holder.

I removed all the residue of glue (still present in the 1st pic), re-positioned it and reglued it from the back of the dial with a bit of cyanoacrylate glue.

Fixed hand (dial not yet cleaned):

Final result (the dust is OUTSIDE the glass):

Now let's go to the movement.

These are, in chronological order, all the pics of the movement dismantle.

Movement still cased, only removed part is the rotor:

Autowind bridge (you really need to take care about the micro gear there, it is easy to lose it!):

Keyless (take care to the micro washer below the setting lever jumper! Visible in the 1st pic here below)

Comments on the movement: very solid one in my opinion. The finishing is quite rough and the design is much less "clean" than an ETA 2824 with many more little parts.

The way the date changer wheel is done makes it not breakable if the date is changed when it's already engaged.

Cheers,

GenTLe

This is excellent, thank you. Post like these give one encouragement to diy. Waiting for tools to arrive so that I can open up late 90's purchased submariner and find out what exactly is in there and give it a service.

Update!

One of the thing that I didn't like of this watch is the fact that it has the dial color that is a "reddish-grey", while the gen is pure grey...

Thanks to @Mary watch (our TD here) I managed to but a dial from the new power reserve version, this one:

Here you can well see the color difference between the 2 dials:

The feet of the new dial didn't match the old movement, so I had to chop them away (I then used dial dots applied to the bord of the movement to fix the dial in place). Another task is about the fake PR hand post, which was snapping in position on the old dial, while the new dial had a slightly bigger hole, so I had to glue the post (not the hand) while keeping the hand in proper position and height respect to the dial. I used UHU 300 epoxy glue (24h drying time, but 300kg/cm2 force), supporting the post from below with a piece of insulating tape under the dial (removed once the glue was dry) and supporting the hand with a tiny piece of lint free paper.

Final result:

Ok, there's a fake PR, but it ticks like the gen, and now also looks like the gen!

I'm happy :)

I noticed it, but... who cares :) At wrist distance it's not noticeable.

Tnx!

That was a fun read. A big pet peeve of mine is fake power reserve dials - especially if they are pointing at zero. Great choice to change that. Love the height you gave the PR hand using the tape - it looks perfect.

I read this all 2 times - but did I miss where you say what movement that is?

Thanks mate, I've no idea of the movement maker :)
It is described as a 25j: https://www.intime01.co/iwc/1985-big-pilot-5002-ss-grey-superlumed-dial-on-black-leather-strap-a25j.html

EDIT: ok, I've just finished to service a SeaGull ST2555 / TY2555 (like those used in certain Panerai reps) and this DEFINITIVELY is from the same family, one of the ST25 variants (there are with open heart like the ST2503 and other variants too).
