Rolex Datejust 36mm - Fluted Bezel / Silver dial / Baton numerals (plus photos)

Hello fellas!

After doing some research, and with the idea of getting myself a nice gen Rolex in a couple of months, I ended up narrowing my choices down to three: Explorer I, Datejust and Submariner (I've added the lovely Milgauss and the very useful for me GMT to that selection, but that's another history).

This one came from TS. Communications were excellent and both Christina and Miffy tried to my emails promptly and with more than enough info. The watch arrived today, after a couple of weeks (there was some disruption because of a bank holiday in China on the 5th of April). The review of the Explorer can be found here:

Anyway, the Datejust is finally here and I have some mixed emotions. My initial impression is: superb! I think the Datejust is one of the most iconic Rolex around and the silver dial has the perfect balance of class without being as flashy as the yellow gold ones.

Now onto my concerns... The jubilee bracelet clasp is quite loose. I mean, it closes properly but it opens up very easily (it popped open a couple of times, and i wasn't clapping or patting anyone's back, to be honest). Replicas are a bit of a lottery so I'll take the hit.

The bezel. The fluted bezel is one of theost recognisable features of a good Datejust, and I have the feeling it's not sharp enough. Maybe I'm being a bit of a diva here, because you can't expect the same sharpness from a gen Rolex, of course. But, I don't know, I've seen a few gens and this one doesn't feel right (or I am just having a bad day, who knows!).

Anyway, the watch looks great and if I find a solution to the clasp issue it will be a keeper. An alternative would be to try an oyster bracelet (anyone got one in UK for sale?).

Here are some nice shots, fresh from the oven!

Hello gorgeous!

Isn't the glass a bit high?

Other than the clasp going a bit loose, the bracelet is surprisingly good.

Wristie one

And wristie too, at dawn.

The lume isn't amazing, but I wasn't expecting much

Anyway, if someone has a recommendation on how to tighten the grip on that clasp please let me know. I have read that gently bending a bit the metal plate that goes underneath would help but it's really hard and I don't want to apply a lot of strength.

I like this date just a lot but with a smooth bezel, for some reason, I can't stand looking at the fluted bezel.

That looks good to me. I have been researching the DateJust here recently and I think it looks great!

Nice Datejust! You can tighten the clasp by bending it slightly. If its difficult you can take some needle nose pliers. Just be sure to protect the clasp with some cloth

Lovely watch.

The clasp problem isn't unknown on the gen either. As mentioned by others, it's a simple fix to gently bend the clasp in the right direction to tighten it.

Thank you everyone, I will definitely try to bend the clasp. I'll wrap it with some cloth first so it doesn't get any scratches.

Just wanted to mention that, in an impressive feat of good customer service, Chris and Miffy are already sending a new bracelet free of charge. Hats off to them, really amazing goodwill gesture!

Edit: to clarify only the bracelet is being sent.

Wow, a new replacement watch? Do you have to send the one you have back?

Sorry, I meant the bracelet. A new bracelet (not a new watch!)

The Datejust is my favourite too, but with a smooth bezel.

I can't afford the genuine vintage model at the moment but am keeping an eye on the M2M sales to snap up a vintage model with a Dauphine handset.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the forum.

That's interesting. For this model case/dial I prefer the fluted bezel with oyster bracelet. This is a great looking watch for all occasions; it could easily be your only watch.

google "how to tighten clasp on rolex" - there is a very simple way to do this by bending the clasp with your fingers at a certain point on the watch.  This is very easily fixed by yourself.

Shame that Photobucket won't let you post those oven-fresh shots.
