A Tale of Two Moonwatch's

Recommended Posts

LightGeek

Mary had two Moonwatch's on offer and I couldn't decide which one to get based on pictures... so I got both!

Lacking ANY sort of reference numbers (help?), I'll refer them as "Vintage" (numbered edition) and "AR" (display back with sapphire AR).

Understandably, neither of these are super reps as with any Moonwatch, the subdial spacing is a major tell for those "in-the-know". For everyone else, they're nice watches. The size of both is somewhere between 39.5 and 40mm, which is close to gen. I didn't break out the digital calipers to measure. I'll post pics later.

Overall, I feel the Vintage is classy and dressy due to the additional polished surfaces and the hands shape. The Hesalite is a solid day-to-day watch.

Vintage:

- nearly all case surfaces are polished

- runnings seconds hand is polished

- hour and minute hand is polished

- Omega logo is applied and polished

- lacks crown guards

- more difficult to wind due to lower profile crown

- closed caseback

- raised crystal

- overall visually smaller package

- comes with 20/18 strap and works perfectly for smaller wrists

- strap is sueded and reminds me of a Pam Asso strap, except this one smells pretty bad

- 'hesalite' crystal -- which is essentially acrylic on the rep

AR:

- sapphire crystal with AR coating

- display back

- screw down crown

- white painted hands

- more surfaces brushed such as top of lugs

- printed Omega logo

- Professional on dial

Been looking at your threads with interest, going to have to pull the trigger on one soon, 42mm, then bang a Gen hesalite crystal in...

Screw down crown ?!? On hand wound watch..??

Hmm.. let's see if that'll hold.

@OP Thx for writeup - eagerly waiting for photoshoot & debate..

I can't make up my mind about these also..

Mixed from QC:

[QC pics removed.]

Notice how in the QC the vintage hands don't show polished finish due to glare. Much nicer in person.

I'm a fan of domes crystals (hey Tudor Bronzo!) so this one has a serious shot at replacing the gen reduced:

And your caseback photo of limited edition is waaay better than TD's.

On TD's photos always looks overpolished / too shiny (on a places where it shouldn't be.)

@OP if you will ever open any of those watches - it would be great to know are caseback interchangeable.

Well, the biggest thing the reduced has over these is the auto movement. Winding these tiny crowns aren't too fun. Fulfilling, but not too fun.

Surprised nobody corrected me yet. The vintage one has "hesalite" crystal which means it scratches. This is a minor sticking point as my gen reduced has the same. I DID wish I bought the sapphire version but that costed more. Given it's a rep, it will probably show scratches easier -- but also likely polishes out easier.

I was hoping it was a domed (raised) sapphire crystal like the Tudor Bronzo, alas, no.

Great thread. The TD's have two versions of the one you call "AR", one with professional on the dial and one without; same hand design. I think yours with Professional looks better. Pics of the clasp would be great - does that also show Professional?

How does the quality of the rep bracelet compare with your gen?

Is it as chunky and what about comfort?

Are the end links on rep solid?

All the clasps say Professional and Speedmaster.

The bracelet on the AR is chunky but poorly finished. I haven't taken out the Vintage one yet.

Now, who to keep...

I'm really taking a liking to the vintage version. Love the raised acrylic crystal and more shiny bits than the other.

What isn't good is the terrible strap off gassing smell. I'm sitting at a workshop and getting conscientious about the stink the rep leather is floating around me.

Damn I'm in love with that vintage, can't wait to have funds ready to order one from Mary.

It is mostly referred to as Speedmaster FOiS (First Omega in Space) or just Numbered Edition.

@Pure B, thanks for the nomenclature, will reference it as FOiS :)

@Omeg@007, it's a relatively short strap which will probably fit between 6.2-7.4. Fits and feels great, smells terrible (for now).
