EVALUATION: (*) FIRST CLASS REP bordering lower status (KW decorated P.3000)

PAM 532 is a Unique Edition of 500 pcs. year 2013 released. It is made using the Stainless Steel Radiomir 1940 47mm case of PAM 514 but for this special watch the case is dark grey lead pencil DLC coated.

The official name is “PANERISTI FOREVER” and is engraved in big characters in the contour of the SS caseback. The name is because this watch is dedicated to Officine Panerai’s most loyal supporters

This is not the first time that Panerai makes a watch for its supporters, In 2010 Panerai made the PAM 360 “Paneristi” and maybe it will not be the last.

PAM 532 design can remember the PAM 360, due to the DLC coating, white inscriptions and coloured lume, but there actually are many differences.

PAM 360 is made with a conventional Luminor 44mmm case and PAM 532 is made with the thinner new Radiomir 1940 47mm case. PAM 360 is fitted with the typical Panerai Crown Guard whereas PAM 532 has a simple crown. Pam 532 has sandwich structure instead of sausage like PAM 360. PAM 532 markers have lume material clearly cream-orange coloured whereas the PAM 360 lume is more yellowish. PAM 532 caseback is just engraved without paint but PAM 360 caseback is engraved with inscriptions filled by black paint. Another interesting difference is that PAM 360 has a white OP logo on dial whereas PAM 532 comes with the well known human torpedo logo “PIG” embossed in the dial surface.

Obviously the movement is also different having PAM 532 a Panerai Manifattura P.3000 calibre with 3 days of power reserve.

GEN PAM 532 TECHNICAL DETAILS

MOVEMENT- Hand-wound mechanical, Panerai P.3000 calibre, executed entirely by Panerai, 16½ lignes, 5.3 mm thick, 21 jewels, Glucydur® balance, 21,600 alternations/hour. Incabloc® anti-shock device. Power reserve 3 days, two barrels. 160 components.

FUNCTIONS- Hours, minutes, small seconds.

CASE- Diameter 47 mm, steel with special hard black coating. Screw-down winding crown personalised OP.

BEZEL- Steel with special hard black coating.

BACK- Screw, steel. “Paneristi Forever” engraved.

DIAL- Black with luminous Arabic numerals and hour markers. Seconds at 9 o’clock.

CRYSTAL- Sapphire, made from corundum, 1.8 mm thick. Anti-reflective coating.

WATER-RESISTANCE- 10 bar (~ 100 metres).

STRAP- PANERAI personalised leather strap and trapezoidal matt steel buckle with special hard black coating.

There are some discussions about the colour of the PAM 532 lume, which seems ECRU in Paneari website and in some pics, but gen reviews made with the watch in the hands are indicating that PAM 532 lume is orange and even I have seen a pic showing the PAM 360 side by side with a PAM 532 where you can see that PAM 532 lume is not Ecru colour but a colour closer to PAM 360, but more orange.

July 2014- KW released a PAM 532 rep correctly made of SS DLC coated and nicely finished.

This is a very nicely built rep but has still some flaws to be corrected

Nice review and pictorial from Kilowattore

Dial layout, markers, inscriptions and sandwich cutouts are accurate. Maybe the rep sandwich depth seems bigger but this is due to rep upper layer of the sandwich is a bit more detached from the lower layer of the dial giving the appearance of deeper cutouts. The PIG logo is the same as we can see in KW PAM Boutique, therefore good enough to be very difficult to see differences without a lens, it is sharp and well defined and with shape accurate enough. Maybe the surface of the rep has a bit less texture than gen but this is almost impossible to be seen without a loupe.

The main problem of the dial is the lume colour which is a bit orange in gen whereas rep colour is ecru without orange hue. This is a controversial matter as above mentioned, in above pic you can see PAM 532 lume have a colour even darker than PAM 360 lume and the orange hue is obvious. Besides many gen reviewers are talking about the orange colour of PAM 532 lume.

Case and bezel shape is accurate and you cannot see evident flaws. Just to say that lug bar holes are placed clearly inwards.

Another thing is the DLC colour and finish surface. Gen DLC is clearly pencil lead or gun metal and the case surface under the coating seems no grainy, almost polished. Rep colour is matt black and the case surface under coating is clearly sandblasted or beadblasted, even some times very evident (as commented by kilowattore in his review).

Crown shape is accurate with a bit inaccurate logo, but it is good enough. Gen has in the case under the Crown a notch with the exact crown shape. Gen crown completely screwed doesn’t touch the case and remains clearly detached form the case clearly showing the crown tube. This is a very polemic matter because the visible chromed crown tube is at least aesthetically arguable. Some people are saying that Panerai leaves the crown detached due to avoid damage DLC coating with the movements of the crown, but that cannot be the truth because Panerai makes the same with the Radiomirs 1940 with cases made of polished SS (PAM 512-514)

KW rep has also a notch in the case but the shape is less squared than gen, rep notch is more rounded and doesn’t copy exactly the shape of the crown. Rep crown completely screwed seems a bit less detached from the case than gen. But all those differences are few noticeable. Crown tube mainly when the crown is unscrewed has some evident differences. To clarify all above commented about Crown and crown tube read:

Review of the crown, crown tube and notch of the case in KW Pam 532 in comparison with Gen PAM 532 , PAM 512 from jamztio and Pam 514 from Vbmrk:

Crystal has a bevelled very close to gen but it is usually placed more raised than gen, wich usually remains flush with the bezel. As showed in kilowattore’s review the AR is not completely colourless with a bit of purple hue (few noticeable) but the AR effect is really low.

Hands are accurate with a bit wider lume as usually

CP is much bigger than gen. Noticeable flaw

Caseback seems accurate under a direct observation without references, fonts are accurate and engraving is nicely made and deep like gen. But in a detailed comparison you can see that some inscriptions are slight off-center and some misalignments. It is clear that contour inscriptions PANERISTI FOREVER are made in a separate process from the inner inscriptions, and there are misalignments and inconsistencies of the placement and alignments of both parts. As above said few noticeable, but to be corrected in the future.

Obviosuly this rep is far from getting a Super rep status, although a closed caseback would allow this evaluation since the movement is not visible.

There are also many flaws: Colour and texture, Lume colour, crystal AR, crown tube and notch, bigger CP… to keep an evaluation of First Class rep. But KW PAM 532 is an important attempt and the watch is very well built and finished with a nice appearance. Due to this reason it can keep an evaluation of First Class rep bordering a lower status.
