Chrono 24 is the Devils Playground : Tudor Big Block 79160

Recommended Posts

A couple of months back i went to meet a friend of mine in London, did all the usual watch related stuff finishing up at the Burlington Arcade to check out some vintage stuff, tried on a nice 1680 red sub and a 6263 big red black dial which was as lovely as i always imagined it would be. ( with the usual £ 30k price tag :( )

A little later i was sitting at a cafe watching the world go by when this guy stops to look at the menu and he had the most stunning looking watch on his wrist .... a 6263 i thought and as is my way, i was out of my seat to go and have a little chat.

" Beautiful watch " i said " 6263 ? "

" Thanks but No " he said " it's Tudor from the 80's, i have the 6263's ( yes plural ) but don't really wear them as i prefer the size of this and it's a fraction of the price so it makes more sense for a daily wearer "

Upon inspection it was bigger, with a date and crown guards, but it had the same vintage Rolex look and shine. Anyway, nice guy we had a brief chat and he went on his way.

I'd seen the more modern ( tiger ) Tudor chronos and they were nice but didn't do it for me, but this model had completely passed me by. After a spot of research it seems that these Big Block ( apparently Rolex used the seadweller case for these, tapped for the pushers ) 791** models were produced for 6 years between 1989 and 1995 with black or white dials in the following bezel variations :

79160 black tachymeter bezel

79170 black unidirectinal graduated bezel

79180 steel tachymeter bezel

Anyways my 6263 of choice would be the black dialed big red ( followed by the white dial ) so after deciding what needed to get sold i started hunting a decent 79160 version.

I watched a few on chrono 24 for a few weeks noticing that they moved quickly ( often times there would be 10 -15 available and a few days later only 3 ) After seeing one with box and papers last Thursday and checking out the seller ( a well established store in Munich ) i made the call Friday afternoon ...... Very professional and efficient, i sent the money straight away and this morning it arrived.

For anyone with 6263 tastes and Omega / Tag Heuer pockets i can't recommend this model enough ...... there is absolutely nothing i can say against this watch.

A proper Rolex/Tudor built vintage chronograph with all the charm of a 6263 at a fraction of the price with a rock solid, easy to maintain 7750 movement and at 40mm + pushers the extra size a lot of people wish they had with the 6263.

Nice little article on the Tudor chronos showing the bezel and dial options here :

Mr Stubbs

At last, a Tudor as beautiful as a Speedmaster!

I jest, I jest. I had no idea these existed. They are stunning! Omega pockets, no, don't have them. All I can do is look at the components and say WHY doesn't someone rep this for me? It's just a beautiful arrangement of components.

Good for you Jez. Cheers.

Rick.

cheers for the kind words all :)

@ stubbs ..... it does actually have a touch of the speedmaster about it.

@ Hornet : a touch under £ 3k [ after my bank stiffed me on the exchange rate for an international transfer ] which was middling in price, seen 'em as low as 2.5k and as high as 4k

I hate you!

i love you !

You told me this story a few months ago, and I knew it was a matter of time before you found one. Exactly the right color/bezel combo choice. Oh wow it's stunning…
