Tanning a strap?

Recommended Posts

GenTLe

All this chatting about the Ranger is triggering this question.

So I have a bund strap that Andrea (Martu) made for it.

It is a bit too flat colored and a bit too soft.

This one from Nero is maybe a bit rigid but has a mixture of tones that make it just beautiful.

So, apart bringing it to the beach, which is too far, hot, smelly of sun oil and I guess maybe it isn't that effective to tan a piece of cow leather.... Is there a way to tan a strap (and maybe making it a bit less softy) without it to shrink or being damaged?

Thanks, GenTLe

Sure there is. It's as simple as olive oil. You can apply it with your finger or let it soak in a bowl of it. Wipe off the excess and let it dry in a sun filled window for a couple of days and you'll have darkened it by a good number of shades, depending on how the hide absorbs the oil.

You can also use mink oil, but I find olive oil is less greasy (in the long run) than mink oil and you can darken it with more control with olive oil (thin coats until you get the shade you want, or just go whole hog and soak it.

Thanks Abe. I have already done it with some leather oil, and it darkened it a bit but with a pretty uniform color and still it is a bit too soft.

Try to look also on the web :)
