Patek Philippe 5296 Mini Review & Photoshoot!

Hey Gang

A little story behind this one. If you can be arsed with it, read on. If you just want the eye candy, feel free to scroll down. :D

A lady friend of mine wanted a new watch with a larger, clearer dial than the 30mm she currently wears. Her mince pies are going and she has to squint and move her wrist to her eyes to tell the time. Knowing that I'm into watches and own a few reps she asked my advice; I said, as I do to everyone, that watches are a very personal taste and to give me some parameters, which were:

  • Yellow gold case
  • Yellow gold bracelet or brown leather strap
  • We decided between 35-38mm (not a dainty wrist)
  • White or cream dial
  • Sapphire crystal
  • Stick markers
  • Date complication
  • Auto movement
  • Oh, and I do like Patek Philippe . . .

Armed with this I knew the best man for the job. Enter, stage left Tim, Fat Panda, Watchfinder. I dropped him an email and gave him these parameters. Within 2 hours he sent some pics of this 5296. Fitted every criteria:

Tim: 'Here you go, Gaz. A yellow gold 5296, 38mm, white dial, sapphire with an A ETA movement on brown leather'

Me: 'Yes please, Tim.'

So here we are. Delivered just 10 days after the first email. Service of the highest order. Take a bow, Tim, although I suspect it was Dan that did all the work . . .

And what a stunner.

The sleekness of the case is incredible, just 9.6mm, 10.7mm with the slightly domed sapphire crystal. I was expecting the usual cardboard cow rep strap, but this is actually very soft, well made and totally satisfactory.

The crown operation is excellent; smooth and trustworthy with satisfying clicks. Date flips over bang on 12 and is perfectly centred. Nice exhibition caseback, which is a big tell, but that won't bother the recipient, or me, really.

The only downside is that I need to part with it, although given the quality I might just email Tim again . . .

If you've stayed with me thus far, then well done and thanks. Here's something for your endurance :D

Fair play all around.

I enjoyed your story and I am sure your friend will be more than excited to receive this.

Bang on the money mate, judging her requirements.

Just by looking at the comparisons (who needs the case back details) At gen to rep the only issue would be the size of the crown.

Again I would not have a clue and indeed would not care.

Pics, gorgeous as usual. I have lots to learn :)

Nice piece, I'm glad there are still Patek reps with ETA movements out there, the slim profile is what this watch is all about, a decorated Miyota just wouldn't be the same!!

I do wish they'd plate the caseback though, got the same issue with my 5131j!!
