Nikosaldente 630 Posted October 25, 2016 Hey guys, My father in-law has this beautiful Longines 1967 gold watch! it has a 284 Longines hand wound 17 Jewels movement! It seems that he over wound it and broke the mainspring! He then, gave it to me to take it to my watch-smith for a repair! "That should be fairly easy" I thought! Naaaaaaaaaah! It seems that in this movement (Longines 284), the mainspring comes with the barrel and the pinion, as a whole replacement part! Due to the age of the watch, neither my watch-smith nor I could source one! I tried e-bay but nothing! Could anyone tell me where I might find one or if there is a compatible one that should do the trick? Any help is appreciated! Located in EU! Photos: Thank you in advance! Cheers! edwinowl 180 Posted October 25, 2016 Bro. You should be able to measure the broken Spring. Measuring length, width and thickness is critical. Your smith should know this ?? PM me.

GenTLe 1,503 Posted October 25, 2016 (edited) Also, these are replacements for longines 280: https://www.cousinsu...archTerm=GR2673 (you need to registed to Cousins to see it) Ask your watch tech to look at the broken one and tell you if it's the T end or not. I believe Cousins is wrong in the description: the handwind should be the T end one, and the auto should be the non-T end one. You can even check yourself: if the barrel has small holes to fit the T of the end of the mainspring. Just like this one: Not 100% sure if it fits the 284 too... But probably it fits See: http://www.ranfft.de...wk&Longines_284 Edited October 25, 2016 by GenTLe

Nikosaldente 630 Posted October 25, 2016 I was told by the watch-smith that the mainspring was welded in the barrel. That's why he couldn't use just a new spring and put it in the old barrel! This should be a complete "barrel-mainspring-pinion" part. I showed him a photo of a dissassempled 284 movement and he said that he needed the marked pieces in the same attached photo! edwinowl 180 Posted October 26, 2016 Barrel, main Spring and barrel arbour. Seems he's saying they're welded together? He is right as cousins no longer supply these. You may have to wait for a movement or get lucky and pick one up in a spares sales via e bay or other media mate. I'll ask around my contacts.

edwinowl 180 Posted October 26, 2016 Wow great find gentle, I would say it would. For that money I'd take a punt. Seems they come as one piece anyhow.
Nikosaldente 630 Posted October 26, 2016 Wow great find gentle, I would say it would. For that money I'd take a punt. Seems they come as one piece anyhow. I'll take the plunge! Hopefully I won't throw 28€ (18€-Part+10€-Shipping) down the drain and the part fits!
GenTLe 1,503 Posted October 26, 2016 Let us know In the ranfft.de site I cited before it seems that the 280 series has minor differences from one to another. Like 7750, 7751, 7753... Parts like the mainspring, autowind bridge, click springs etc are always the same
Nikosaldente 630 Posted October 28, 2016 I've sent a mail asking if the part will fit the 284 before I purchase it! Still no answer...:-( 2 days now
Nikosaldente 630 Posted November 1, 2016 How many days will it take to answer to a mail? I sent one on October 26th and one on 29th! Still nothing! Sent another today!
TRANSPORTER 1 Posted December 22, 2016 Take the plunge mate and buy it, you can always sell it on if it doesn't fit
Nikosaldente 630 Posted December 29, 2016 Take the plunge mate and buy it, you can always sell it on if it doesn't fit I actually tried to buy it on November the 2nd but...... Neither the PayPal go through with the payment, nor my Debit Card! After trying to use my card, I got a phone call from my bank asking me if I was the one trying to buy something in France or if I had lost my card and it was someone else! When I ensured them it was me, they said that they prohibited the transaction because that shop was not trustworthy and suspected phishing ... Now, I'm back where I started!
