MDK 0 Posted February 9, 2017 I thought I would add a few words about the Oak Bark Tanned Leather that I am using for my straps. This has long been a tradition in the UK which is now beginning to fade out. However, we are very lucky to have one tannery left in the UK producing this unique leather. Sitting in the Devon hills is a tannery that is still producing Oak Bark tanned leather, it is of the finest quality; it is a water powered tannery that uses Water, Devon Cow skin, Oak Bark from the Lakes here in the UK and around 12 months of time. It is believed to be the last tannery in Europe producing leather this way, the Leather is very special and prized around the world. The Oak Bark is mixed with water from the Coly river in Devon to make liquor, the skin is soaked in the solution, they are moved periodically to a stronger liquor, the whole process takes around 12 months to complete. The result is a special hide that has a unique smell, durability and very supple, the hides are then hand dyed using aniline dyes to give them the rich colours and variation across the hide
