What do we think of the Tudor Style?

Recommended Posts

MetalMickey

I'm in the market for a vintage Datejust, but for the same money - or less - you can get the modern Tudor equivalent: the Tudor style.

What do we think? I like the steel, and there is something about the two-tone that catches my eye but not sure I'd get on with the steel crown (although no problems with gold plating rubbing off!)

Comes in 38 and 41mm with fluted or plain bezel...

This is the one that I am thinking of, about £1600

Fluted...

Fluted bezel is a lot nicer, although not too keen on the bracelet.

I think it's a nice-looking watch...

... but I'd still buy a used Rolex DJ in preference as it's likely to hold its value that bit better...

Agreed. Surprisingly hard to see a real photo of the new fluted ones: I've asked my local AD to get some in for me to have a look at

Yep, you're right about that...

I prefer the full steel one I think, but yeah, what Greg said. I'd go for a DJ.

Fluted all the way!!! Looks more striking than the others - I totally get the two tone thing too, I've been looking for two tone watches and think before the year is out I'll have found one!

I like the dark faced SS fluted bud, but you will flip it I have no doubt and the rolex makes better financial sense and I think looks better

I think a well chosen vintage DJ will be a forever watch Mickey.

Take your time to find a nice example & it is worth checking the specialist watch auctions as you could score a bargain.

I'm generally in for a Tudor, all the goodness of a Rolex without looking like an arsehole as most Rolex wearers do, that said, they've not really put any effort into the dials on the ones in yr pics, maybe a little textured or sunburst??

There are some coloured ones, but nothing to write home about.

So classy without that hideous cyclops but the DJ comments are correct.

To be honest I wouldn't even be considering a gen datejust when you have a good franken

It's a big birthday present for myself in January. Something to pass down to the kids that will have value.

Must admit this is a very good point & something I have thought about.

My Franken DJ really does the job & satisfies the desire so I would only buy a gen if it was an amazing deal.

I have the same feeling with the Tudor Black Bay, I saw a good deal on a gen but the rep is almost indistinguishable & that stopped me from pulling the trigger.

Really a personal question as it is about taste. I would go for the first steel version that you showed. Than again I really don't like two tone,..... it is just too much out there and the same would apply for a fluted bezel.

In the end buy what you love and what you want to wear. If you make the right choice for yourself than 'keeping value' shouldn't matter as you don't need to part from the watch. :-)

I'd take this over a DJ all day based on aesthetics. I agree, however, that if it were just an economic decision the DJ is a better investment.

That's the dilemma... 2 grand on a 1970s DJ as a possible investment or.1.5k on a better looking watch that might lose money?

Possibly getting a 1977 Datejust tomorrow.... :)

TUDOR!

Either way you'll have a fantastic watch to enjoy. Those are good decisions with which to be confronted.
