childishthing 1 Posted May 26, 2017 Fancy a Franken DJ or DD? Yes please! I got a hold of StoneP at our neighbor RWI to start building me a Franken DJ. It's been on my wish list for quite some time, ever since I saw American Psyscho and decided I had to have one. If you don't know, StoneP is not a TD... here or at RWI, he's just a member who specializes building Franken DJ & DD. They're a bit on the pricey side for a watch that you can't have serviced at an AD, but the value in gen parts justifies the cost. He was very quick to respond to my PM and gave me detailed pricing on exactly what I wanted. He's gotten pretty knowledgeable about the watches and was able to answer all of my questions. Because he's an American and stateside, there is no language barrier or 12+ hour time difference like there is with some of the TDs. I sent him this photo and said that this is the watch I wanted him to build for me, inspired by the American Psyscho watch. He was quick to educate me that the 16013 in American Psyscho had THIS DIAL which is period correct, and that the dial I wanted came from a 16233. The photo of the watch I sent him had its original dial swapped. I decided NAH, I like the one I picked out better. So here's the build we have going: -gen 16013 case -gen 16000 caseback -gen crystal/cyclops -gen gold crown/tube -gen gold 18k bezel -gen 16233 dial -gen Tudor hands -rep full wrap 18k bracelet -a2824 movement After payment was made, he started to assemble the parts. He said he'd send me pictures when he can. The whole process takes about 3 weeks + shipping. I paid on the 10th. This was my first update on the 14th Dial received! And my next update on the 25th Crystal, bezel, and caseback Dial, hands, and crown together on movement Update for the 27th Watch head together, just waiting for bracelet. Update 6/13 - watch completed, will ship tomorrow That's it for now. I will keep updating until I receive the watch and then add a summary of the whole experience and some up close photos/video. Diver Dave 0 Posted May 26, 2017 So, why not at this point stick in a gen movement? There's no shortage of them....
Genius 281 Posted May 26, 2017 So, why not at this point stick in a gen movement? There's no shortage of them.... I'm guessing price A2824 = $80, go gen and its 10x the price
BadPickle 2,802 Posted May 26, 2017 will this stoneP fellow provide you with purchase receipts for all these "ahem" Gen bits and bobs?
splke 4,429 Posted May 26, 2017 Yes just how do you know they are gen ? is there a fair amount of trust involved here ?
Genius 281 Posted May 26, 2017 will this stoneP fellow provide you with purchase receipts for all these "ahem" Gen bits and bobs? If the case doesn't say POFEY on then that's a good sign Fact is whatever its still not gonna be a gen rolex but the big bux are spent making the franken build indistinguishable from the gen, so to my eyes at least if that's achieved then it doesnt really matter.... Although $1400 is a lot of money
Genius 281 Posted May 26, 2017 That said mymanmatt has built some shockers and folk still flock to him so maybe trust isnt that important
Genius 281 Posted May 26, 2017 But honestly what the fuck do I know, I bought my franken based on a copy and paste of what the last man bought it as just took their word that was what the parts were and after owning it over a year I still believe it even though it was shoddily put together and had to be rescued by ROLIE. Fact is its always gonna be a fake/franken no matter how many gen parts go into it so as long as the owner is happy with the finished products and doesn't mind spending what they are spending on it then everyone wins
BadPickle 2,802 Posted May 26, 2017 its dickhead money IMO, they come up for sale here and there quite frequently, only sell after being heftily reduced.... sugar coat it all you want, its still a fake watch. I'd put this clown and mymanmatt (or whatever) in the same category.

I'd put this clown and mymanmatt (or whatever) in the same category. Yeah mine was considerably cheaper than this... But... I did get a bargain and know if I stuck it up on the geek at double what I have in it it would move quick enough :) its not for sale though and probably never will be and for the same reason that people do shell out this kind of dough... Gen prices have gone up and you are looking 2k English for a decent DJ so if you just want it to wear not as in investment and can get something indistinguishable for 25% of the cost then I can see why they would. Never actually seen a stoneP build in person but hes gotta be better than matt mine had fingerprints on the hands and a pube on one of the indexes on the gen dial FFS
MetalMickey 179 Posted May 26, 2017 My gen cost me 2k, but it's still worth 2k and it'll be worth 2k plus inflation when I pass it onto my son. That's the reason I dumped my franken and went gen. Honestly, the $300 reps are as good as the franken watches (and don't have the obvious short hands tell) but each to their own.
linos 3 Posted May 26, 2017 Mate StoneP is a good franken builder. I purchased a TT DJ From Him And it was immaculate. Cost me only £675 though brand new. At over $1400 that is serious dough. Surely you are better off saving a little bit more and buying a decent second hand one for around £2k?
Mr_B 2,402 Posted May 26, 2017 I just don't get it. I appreciate the changing of plated gold for solid, but the rest is beyond me, when you can pick a decent gen up for 2k... but each to their own. I'm sure it will look great, & I'd hope so spending $1400!

Honestly, the $300 reps are as good as the franken watches (and don't have the obvious short hands tell) but each to their own. ^^ This, I'd never use a Gen case with a non-gen movement. The FIRST thing I do when I look over a watch is to pop open the back. There's no sense using a genuine case without the correct movement. Old 38mm case Rolex's are cheap enough: Buy one and rob the movement out FFS. Even though you've got a Franken at that point, it's one that has some value. The bottom line is that what's happening here is that "somebody" is buying old watches, ripping out the movements (the "good part"), selling them, and using what's left (the not so good parts) with shitty movements to get rid of the unwanted cases. Bet ya that the movement that came out is being stuck into a Yuki case and passed off as a gen vintage Submariner... dollars to donuts bet. You're getting the unwanted shit that's left. There ain't no magic big-box-o-gen-cases and backs anyplace,. They are watches that are being scrapped for their movements so that those movements can be used to build REALLY counterfeit watches... Truly, for the price we're talking here, a Gen would be a far better deal. Edited May 27, 2017 by Diver Dave
tomtom1988 64 Posted May 27, 2017 I agree, some Frankens look the nuts and like genius said, getting one at the right price can be a steal. No matter how many gen parts or 99% gen people claim them to be, they are still 100% rep

I've handled this one; it's really nice.
