How to protect seller?

Recommended Posts

tesmith2112

I have an opportunity to sell severals watches to an individual in other state. Obviously I wouldn't ship the watches until I received the funds. If he pays me via Paypal, what's to prevent him from disputing the transaction and getting his money back? What ways can I ensure this will not happen? I do not want him to have my address, so he cant send a bank note or cash to me direct. I guess I'm trying to figure out the best to to protect myself. I appreciate any advise.

Thanks!

Why dont you just use bank transfer? Or try using "send money as gift" as a paypal option. If it is available, advise him to use that option, this should prevent him from getting his money back. In some countries (like where I live) this is not a possible option. And don't forget: NEVER write anything about "reps" or watch names in paypal!

BTW: I made my first rep-watch deal with ebay :) If you need further information, feel free to pm me.

Thank you powderfreak! The gift option sounds good. I guess it would be hard to dispute a gift... I'll get on Paypal's website and do some dispute research.

On the other hand if I was the buyer I would refuse to send the money as a gift, as he would lose any protections though PP.

Paypal does an eCheque thing, I think? I think that means they can't chargeback?

Why should the buyer trust you any more than you trust him? Seems like more buyers get screwed in this than the sellers.

Assuming this transaction is from the forum and if you're that paranoid, maybe you should be selling somewhere else, like Craig's list. That's the whole point of having these forums. So we can meet and get to know each other and be comfortable dealing with each other.

If it's to a perfect stranger............There is no easy answer because neither one of you are going to have any trust in the other.

This is a stranger, sort of. Friend of a friend of a friend deal. If it were this forum I wouldn't worry a bit.

I agree with OP.

I stopped selling on ebay (3400+ pos, 100% fb) 'cos I hate, abhor, loathe the dreaded PayPal.

Why should I have to accept it?

Buyers have FAR too much power, and PP nearly always sides with them anyway.

I liked cheques (checks to our non-UK cousins), never a problem.

Stick to your guns.

Does the guy have an eBay account? Do you? Sometimes I give my ebay account name as a reference, tell them to pm me on eBay if they want, I will confirm account is mine. I have done this for off-eBay off-forum transactions (ads through paper), to establish trust.

Buying and selling is all about trust, if you sell to this guy you do not have to refund until you have received the items back. If they are not as you sent them tell PAYPAL

i will tell you what you NEED to hear, and why you posted this thread. DO NOT SELL TO THIS PERSON. there, that's what you were looking for. i really feel like you were looking for someone to just tell you no, but everyone tap danced around it. :)

OR, sell them to your friend, and let him/her deal with ANYTHING POST SALE.

and WAT44, you are a noob, i wouldn't sell anything to you. powderfreak and balad, you both have 5 USELESS posts, and 1162 USEFUL posts! get it right!!!!!!
