black263 228 Posted July 21, 2017 OK, so we all know the shitstorm that Botofucket has started with the dropping of support for forum hosting. So I took advice from here and I opened an account with postimage. So all I needed to do was download my Botofucket album to my PC, and then upload it to Postimage. Simples. I went to my album and clicked on the button that said download your album. I got a message that it would be downloaded as a Zip file which would take a few minutes to set up, and I would get an email to say when it was ready. 10 mins or so later, I got an email saying that my file was now ready for download, and I had a button which would be valid for 12 hours, to start the download. I clicked on the link to get a message that the download was no longer available. This happened a couple of times to I emailed customer services. They replied that it was a known issue, and that I could either download my album one picture at a time. (over 600 images), or of course I could sign up to pay the rip-off. So not only are they trying to hold me to ransom with broken links, but they're making it really inconvenient to pull my images off their site. Twats. ElvisFreak 73 Posted July 21, 2017 yeah... not impressed... I can just imagine a group a rich computer nerds, grinning as they witness the shit storm they created.,,, I wonder if its part of their plan to quit on that site, anyways....so they dont care.... or are they that greedy for real? Swap greedy for desperate and you're about there. Most of the big photo hosts are having major financial difficulties due to the amount of bandwidth being used. An old friend is a director of one of the less well-known ones (because they market themselves mainly at serious photographers) and times are tough... I suspect we're going to see quite a few closing over the coming year or two - and others limiting hotlinking...

elp 26 Posted July 21, 2017 Ouch, sorry to hear that. I was lucky enough to download mine just before the shitstorm.
greg_r 81 Posted July 21, 2017 If they do limit hot linking what will happen to this forum, it lives off pictures? There are other solutions. Postimage's whole business model is based on hotlinking, for instance. Some will survive, but there are always ways. Personally I rent some webserver space for a few quid a month (less than £5) - that gives me storage for 100gb of images and other files. All I need is an FTP client to upload 'em and - at the most basic - a one-line configuration file that allows me to browse the directories via a web browser. I will write up a tutorial on how to do this when I can find time - been meaning to do it for a while.
griffon22 44 Posted July 21, 2017 Maybe I am too "old school" but I would never entrust any files (photo files or other) to any internet company for storage , every photo I ever uploaded to photobucket and other sites, I keep originals on a spare drive , when photobucket did what they did recently i simply logged on ,deleted all (ALL) of my files that were kept by them and closed my account . if you value your images, there is only one person you can trust to keep them safe for future use ,and that is you. photobucket must have lost a shitload of customers over this . strange that the "known issue" you speak of , preventing users from downloading thier own property, only cropped up recently . it looks like a desperate move by photobucket to deter its customers from leaving. I rigged something like that a long time back using an IIS server, Imagemagick and some open source code but can't find it anymore.

JohnG 41 Posted July 22, 2017 I suspect we're going to see quite a few closing over the coming year or two - and others limiting hotlinking... My theory is that they are in decline and they see the writing on the wall, or can´t see a way to make the business make real money, and decided to cash in by holding everyone´s years and years of pictures ransom.... some will pay up, and when they have milked it for all they can, they will disappear (because no one NEW is going to sign up at $300 a year for their shitty service). So people will have paid AND they will be fucked. That´s my gguess. .

From a computer nerd who I am, these actions aren't from people like us (who perfectly know that decisions like these will make us to go searching a new job in few weeks), but for sure from some stupid manager (highly paid) that has no clue of what he is doing and how this market works. If it was 10/15$ year many would have joined them. With what they are asking, and thee free services around, they are just running to the cliff.

JohnG 41 Posted July 23, 2017 Just bought this. About 15 mins later, all my images are in Postimage. Bloody brilliant. the thing there is still no way around is losing the image in the original location. For example, I had a thread on my house restoration project, years of photos, my only choice would be to go back and edit all my old posts with new links... AND that goes for a shitload of other people´s tutorials, informative/review threads, Photobucket just made thousands of threads completely useless. . black263 228 Posted July 23, 2017 I'm willing to do that, but not at random. If someone wants to see the pictures and specifies the thread, I'll replace the pics. But I'm not going off necroposting, just for the sake of it.
