Oris Barrier Reef - gen v rep comparison

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Having long admired a colleagues Oris Barrier Reef dive watch, I was chuffed to see Mary offering the watch as a rep at somewhat less than m'collegue paid for his (around £1300 second hand).

After sterling QC from Mary which saw the first watch rejected by her, the watch arrived on a black rubber strap. The clasp did not, unfortunately work as per the original due to the hinge being incorrectly positioned which prevented it from fully opening. It meant a tight squeeze when trying to get the watch over the hand.

However, the watch itself looked fantastic and fortunately, I already owned a genuine Aquis diver with both rubber and a bracelet. So the bracelet went on the rep and the comparison commenced.

By the end my friend was more than a little miffed with most unable to tell them apart. Biggest tell - as so often - was the bezel click. Just not as pronounced on the rep. Biggest surprise for me was the colour accuracy as this had looked way off in the QC pics.

Anyway here you go. Rep on the left / bottom throughout. Genuine bracelets on both...

A rare brand to rep but the quality is amazing. Not sure if rubber strap buckle issue is generic or if I was just unlucky.

Cheers

I have this, lovely watch. A bit of a sin for the insert which is not correctly aligned as the gen. (And my clasp works fine, I just find the strap even TOO long, which is quite unusual having a 7.6 in wrist...)

What about the crystal? Does the gen has the yellow ring on crystal or it's on the dial as the rep? Because pictures like this seems to have it on crystal:

Been eyeing this - good to know the colour matches as that’s one of the concerns I see people mentioning with the rep.

Really cool that they managed to get the day function working!

hell, you would be hard pressed and overly fussy to pic. I really like Oris, solid watches

Amazing!! :D So, if I'll ever find a gen insert, it will be a truly super rep!

Without gen insert, do you think is it still good for purchase? I think it looks Very good rep.

If you like it, get it! To be a "good purchase" in my book it means: good movement, well done case, bezel, dial (doesn't mean 100% like the gen), screw-down crown if the gen has it, well made clasp. And I like it.

It has all the marks for me. Apart the insert that could have been made better at number positioning.

Does I understand this right: Both gen and rep has the yellow markers /ring on the dial?

I am considering buying this Oris, so I want to know.

Lovely watch. Doubt you will come across anyone who doesn’t think it’s authentic. Mary is great too.
