Molotow Paint Mod

Recommended Posts

GingerApple

Before RWI went down, I read an excellent 'how to' thread from a member over there, whose name I'm afraid I can't recall, who'd decided to try a sharpie-esque paint mod. What he did differently though was use a different paint (Molotow 227HS metallic silver) and a different method; squeeze out a little puddle of paint and dip a cotton bud into that paint before painting onto the bezel.

I thought I'd give it a go as he made it sound so easy and guess what - it is! Bear in mind I'm pretty much a noob, I'm not good at DIY type stuff in general and I've never tried to do anything to a watch apart from change/remove/resize straps. The watch I'm modding is my Noob v7 Sub with all the normal bezel issues that go with it.

The point of this thread is to basically to urge people to give this type of mod a go if you so wish - you can't really fuck it up.  If you do a terrible job, the paint easily wipes of the bezel/crystal with a second cotton bud dipped in methylated spirit (ie, alcohol).

I've taken a couple of pics so people can see the pen and my efforts. Pen first:

First coat going on (I did a few)

After a couple of coats, not yet cleaned properly etc

Next to my ARF Sea-dweller

So it's far from perfect, nor indeed is it finished yet - another coat and then a proper cleaning is needed - but it's a cheap, easy mod that's fun to do. The pen cost about £5 delivered in the UK fyi.

I already had - you part inspired me! I didn't realise how easy it was to do; I was worried about ruining the watch, but I think that is basically impossible. Good work dude.

Thanks buddy! I just can't believe how utterly, ridiculously easy it is. I've finished painting it, but it still needs a bit more of a clean, however I'm going to let it dry overnight.

I just took a pic indoors in low light; not too shabby!

Who has the best sub? I have the best sub mo-fos! Ok, jokes, but it's better than it was!

@GingerBubba Say you were to going swimming with that in the sea or a pool for example, would the pen rub off?

Just taken this picture in a room that's totally unlit save for the light coming from the TV, about 8ft to the top right of the picture. No flash obviously.

Fecking great mod this!

Well, methylated spirit, ie cleaning alcohol, gets it off very easily, but so as not to the disturb the paint in the grooves of the bezel, I found that you can get the paint off the crystal/shiny bits of the bezel simply with baby wet wipes! Easiest mod ever.

Do! And if you don't like it, there's no downside, just wipe it off and you're back to square one.

If you're ever in the chicago area, @GingerBubba you're letting me buy you a beer. Thought I'd stroll over to a near by blick. Check out this molotow paint marker insert mod for myself.  Lets see if i can replicate this guys............................................................................................... HOLY SHIT! That was my reaction an hour ago. Sir, this is by far, the easiest, closest, hands down DIY paint mod for an insert out. NO preparation. NO complicated application. No special this or that. Blob the paint into the insert #'s and hashes, let it dry to its super metallic, perfectly evenly coating, whitish-bright silvery-platinum color and done. Nominating you for best Replica DIY project of the year. Guy's its that good. And I really wanted to be come back to this thread with some pics and say wtf bubba????? I am blown away by this and have tried EVERYTHING.... I'm not sure how or what clued you in on the brand or color but this stuff will finally put an end to the (cringe) sharpie marker in whats suppose to emulate a 10k+ watch mod.... There may be something else ( asides from the spongebob but thats plating, costs hundreds of dollars and I'm not sure whats closer to be totally honest ) Don't tell my good friend Steve, but this might be closer in color. ) but i can promise, its not as easy or as cheap..... Nicely played sir, nicely played.  a noob v7 dssd insert's pics to come soon as it dries...
