n00b fix for DOA A6497 movement

Recommended Posts

Recently as some of you may know I received the stunning PAM 360 PVD from Mary with an A6497 hand winding movement. Unfortunately it was DEAD ON ARRIVAL. I am not a watch hobbyist and I have essentially no experience fixing watches, so I thought I was going to have to pay through the nose to get it serviced or send it back to Mary and risk having it disappear.

BUT, thanks to some amazing members in the shoutbox, they walked me through one method that might fix my watch - and guess what... it worked!

So here is a step by step guide for something anyone with a DOA A6497 movement should try before seeking out a repair shop.

Tools needed -- Ductape, toothpick, soft surface, DOA watch.

Step 1 - Lay the watch face down on a soft surface

Step 2 - Remove the Caseback.

In the shoutbox, they told me a good way to get the caseback off was to ball up some duct tape with the sticky side out. The press the ball of tape to the back of the watch and with moderate pressure turn counter clockwise - and they were right, the case came unscrewed easily!

Step 3 - Identify the problem

I was told to look for a very delicate looking gear under the flywheel. After a few minutes of staring, I finally noticed this:

Step 4 - Gently nudge it

Using a toothpick, I very gently touched that little gear - the very instant i touched it, the watch started running! That's all it needed!

Step 5 - Close it up.

Again, using the ball of ductape as your grip, slowly screw the caseback on clockwise.

Step 6 - WRIST SHOT!

Again, a big thank you to everyone that helped me out! Hopefully this weak ass guide will help someone out!

1. So, what was the problem? Watch needed a kick to run?

2. It's a shame such a beautiful mov't got a solid caseback...
