close enough?

Not close enough and very late to the party :)

By definition (my definition, at least), a dress watch has to be very thin so a shirt cuff will slide over it. Plus, I like a plain face, but that is my taste. Movado puts out a beautiful one which can be bought for around $900. But I've seen reps that would fitr my description, a PP model being one of them

What's your fvcking problem? I was asking the OP if he was looking for a gen or rep watch, my post wasn't intended to be gen vs. rep comparison.

I thought that until I got the Explorer II. The latter is more versatile -- but still not "dressy" enough for this thread.

The GMT IIc is on the sportier side of things I think.

I think you need a touch more style for a dress watch

I go with my Cartier Xl Flying tourbi any time

Frazzle

Omega Deville is a nice subtle choice. This is a very cheap version I got my father in law but I'm sure there are better ones.

Some people here (including the OP) struggling with the concept of a dress watch. A Breitling Superocean is not a dress watch people, nor is a PP Nautilus or AP Royal Oak, these are all sports watches!!

Anyway, PP Calarava or AP Jules Audemars all day long IMO!

Depends on your concept of Dress I guess. I don't do the tuxedo dress up or classical suited up I'm still a young(ish) wipper snapper...

When I do "dress" I like to dress smart quirky. "sports watches" are acceptable within my peers. I tend to sway to my PAM127, I like the vintage look with big watch feel of modern watches. My dad on the otherhand would probably wear a DJ. :)

I'm in my 20's and I would never consider a sports watch or diver as a dress watch...ever

A dress watch is something you wear with your suit to a black tie formal event. Generally very thin to roll off your cuff with a leather strap and small face. Anything else is just another watch or "smart" watch..

& Just to point out...this is a 2 year old thread :giggle:

Nothing wrong with resurrecting a 2 year old thread, better than starting it all over again right?!?

Black Diamond pretty much hot the nail on the head, there are probably a few "grey areas" as with most things, like the 36mm DateJust for example probably technically could be either sports or dress and that's one of the things I like about it, but certainly a Submariner or any Breitling are not dress watches. You can wear them with suits and that's ok, I wear my Sub to work with a sit all the time, but that doesn't make it a dress watch!

None of the above. At present it's my RG ALS Datograph, but I have a Santos on the way, so that may change.
