Well, that was some read, thank you.

A few humble thoughts from an idiot (should you want them):

You have some very, very nice pieces but you are in danger of 'Noob's Burnout'. Buying eight watches a month is unsustainable, unless you are very wealthy.

You may wake up one morning and have a moment of clarity and think, What am I doing? I cant get to work next week because my car needs a new gearbox yet here I am with £4000 tied up in a watch collection!

Then you sell the lot and go back to wearing a quartz beater.

Sometimes I think, 'Right I'm not buying any new watches for a while, I am going to consolidate what I have, get some watches serviced, get some new straps, sell a few pieces etc.'

It is OK to buy a watch and then when it arrives, NOT LIKE IT and immediately sell it on.

You need more Seikos!

You have no Submariner (sacrilege).

If you like Russian watches, you really should consider the Poljot 3133 chronographs.

Also, while I'm on my soapbox, what's with the Username? Are you a former member of the US Marine Corps?

One only hopes you're not spending your grocery money, young man. Splendid watches, obviously.

Can't imagine why he would do that... :D

I told him to get a nice pressage but the lack of subs is what makes this collection good ! :p

A vintage one could be the way of fulfilling this emptiness you are talking about ;)

You don't want to see what his plans are with that particular reference... He has a horrifying spooky plan with his 3133

I appreciate your concern, it's rare to see such a post on a usually banter-y forum (which I enjoy). Rest assured these horological follies are committed from a position of financial stability :thumbsup2:

There are indeed more pressing things in life, and those will always take precedence. I am fortunate to not have much burdens at the moment but of course you never know what is just round the corner!

That said, I am reaching a point of rep saturation, a weird sense of feeling content with my collection and less of the hunger of the last few months! As Glaude has hinted, my love of watches will be taking a different, more space-saving direction...

@McGilli's infatuation with his recent gen and volte-face on reps did have me thinking about specific gens to focus on. So has my Dubey & Schaldenbrand. There has been a lot self-reflection and introspection in this hobby than I first anticipated!

Indeed I have been contemplating a Presage but never got round to it

Not true

Technically a sub.

As for my name, that's just a way to muddy the waters ;)

Funny you recommended the books, I'll be looking for them! Just the other weekend, I visited the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. Fantastic place, lots of clocks and associated history. Of course they had a section discussing the Longitude problem and John Harrison :)

Thank you for your very insightful comments @Waspy

Also what's with your username? Are you a WASP? :p

Appreciate the concern mate! :) The reps are fun but the more important things in life always take priority.

That said, I just realised I could collect discarded receipts to claim more Tesco points, so next month's groceries are sorted

I'll get my TD to arrange a rep wedding

I must admit I generally think @Waspy is speaking with a great deal of sense here.....

@semperfi55 I love the way that you are documenting your ongoing journey (descent) into madness (nice to have a record for posterity). I actually feel quite jealous as you are treading a well-worn path of discovery, it wasn't so long ago that I seemed to be awaiting a new package what seemed like every week. I had TD purchases & M2M one after the other. I think it quietens down naturally for most after 12-18 months my peak was about 25 in total but the vast majority were $300 & above I never bought volumes of the cheaper/gate stuff. I had an eventual epiphany that things were getting out of hand & reflected on how much I had invested/spent/wasted & decided to thin down to around a dozen (currently 15) that I would wear in rotation. My willpower has been generally strong as I still wear a different piece everyday.

I do have some sadness that I now no longer see M2M pieces that I want to pick up or feel the need to contact a TD for the latest piece that I've decided I must have.

I still thoroughly enjoy the forums though & I religiously wear the remaining reps I have in the collection, my TC LV blows me away everytime I wear it & I love my ZF IWC's.

I now inhabit a much quieter less exciting world of making 1 to 2 purchases a year so I'll raise a glass to you & look forward to seeing your further adventures being eloquently documented & captured photographically.....

All the best,

Mark.

Still IMO the best collection on this forum. It would be great if more people would take the time to do what you do. But - they don't hence why it's easy for you to get singled out.

@MAJ75If I'm really truthful, while I love my collection of Rolex reps - I probably only bought them because of this forum, and would never have otherwise. Since deciding to purchase genuine watches that cannot, or just are not repped I've never worn them again and I'd be fine selling them. Except. I'm a collector :) I do love looking a them on occasion.  So, looking at them, seeing the investment - there's always what ifs.

Ahhhh yes... But - heck that could happen after getting married. Or changing jobs. Or moving. Or getting a tattoo. Or buying another bag of cocaine.

Haha what I'm saying is - I think watches are a fantastic hobby. I'd never go to a guitar forum - then tell the guy with 100 guitars at his house that he might regret those purchases. Not my place. Instead - I enjoy his hobby with him, and I'm just happy he's willing to share.

I see what you mean. Last month's acquisitions may well be my rep-buying at its zenith (see what I did there). I have grown strangely content with my collection. I'm not jumping up immediately when I see a piece anymore (there are some exceptions).

I'm curious, have you tried building watches? I see lots of veteran members tinkering away. That seems to give a longer hit of the rep drug, if that makes sense. I could see myself going in that direction.

Do you mean a  White, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant?

Well I thought I was until I had a recent DNA test.

Turns out I am only 33% Anglo-Saxon

51% Scots/Irish

14% Scandinavian

...and 2% GREEK FFS! I have no idea where that 2% came from but since the test I have found myself smashing a lot of plates, its costing me a fortune.

I too am a dilettante horologist.

I can now remove and replace batteries, spring bars, watch straps, SOME casebacks and adjust bracelets.

I have replaced (non-ceramic) inserts, destroying the old one in the process of course.

I can sometimes even remove a stem, a whole movement, dial and hands (as a complete unit). Sometimes I don't ruin the whole watch.

Building on this phenomenal success I bought a watch hands removal tool and actually got a set of hands off a watch.

So I just started thinking, 'I'm fucking George Daniels, me.'

Then I discovered I have no fucking clue how to get the hands back on,  they are just so tiny and refuse to go back on.

Youtube reveals I need to buy a hands-pressing-on gadget.

But even if I got one, I just know I will completely bollocks it up.

Onwards!

THIS.

Worked on my Soviet Day Date to realign a day wheel overlay. Got it sorted, reassembled it, was tightening the screws that hold the movement and dial together. SNAP, the screw head broke off with the remainder of the screw firmly tightened. Well, never going to access that movement in the future, its been sealed in it's tomb now.
